CLAIM: The best archetypal fit for Crystal the Wise is "The Outlaw."

REASON 1: Outlaws are usually virtuous but have the potential to be criminal, just like Crystal.

First of all, Crystal is a tutor, which is a pretty virtuous job. She helps others learn for a living. In addition, she clearly has virtue in the way that she protects her children and puts their needs first by ensuring they have the crown. However, her virtue is tested by means of committing criminal acts, like lying and seducing the Prince to gain is power and end his reign. The 2 sides of Crystal fit the archetype of Outlaw perfectly.

Reason 2: The Outlaw fits Crystal the Wise best because she is clearly independent and owes nobody any favors.

This can be seen when Crystal the Wise decides to slap the Prince right from the start as she witnesses his offensive behavior. She clearly does not condone his behavior and makes it clear, even as a young woman and new wife! She puts herself in potential danger to stand up for herself. Would a damsel in distress do that?! Definitely not! Would a hero act in such rash ways? I don't think so...

COUNTER & REBUTTAL: While some may argue that Crystal is more of a trickster because she tricks the Prince into marrying her several times, she is missing the comedic element most tricksters have.

Throughout the story, her character isn't really funny or entertaining, just pointed and calculated. Other people don't laugh at her tricks and she is too isolated to serve as true entertainment for a group, like when she's trekking through mountains forever or shut in the cellar. Is she a true trickster or is the Prince just really self-absorbed and gullible?

This shows she is a damsel in distress because more often than not, damsels don't have a say in what goes on in their lives.

While some would say that Crystal does not fit the archetype of "the trickster" because she does not have the "comical" component that is common amongst tricksters. However, not all tricksters have/need a "comical" component. For instance in the Native American trickster story, the trickster does not have a comical component. This allows Crystal to be described as a trickster even without the comical component.

COUNTER & REBUTTAL: While one may assume that Crystal more so fits into the role of the Hero as she can persevere against the adversity of the Prince, she does not do anything for any higher purpose.

Crystal only escaped and tricked the Prince for herself rather then for the good of all as the the definition of the hero archetype the states. Her goals are strictly selfish, which is not a bad thing, but it's not an attribute of a hero. She is not even outwardly strong or brave as most heroes are depicted as. Just because Crystal is the protagonist of the myth, does not mean she is heroic.

this main character of the story crystal draws a lot of parallels to the character Anansi from the book Anansi boys. the main character crystal tends to get what she wants from others using her wit and trickery. which is very similar to Anansis methods when he wants to accomplish something.

People may say that Crystal is a trickster because she tricks the prince 3 times. She isn't a trickster because she didn't have her plan planned out until after she got tricked by the prince into the trapdoor room.

We see her as more of a mean individual at the beginning and isn't a trickster at the beginning because she is a smart tutor for the prince and princess. She doesn't trick the prince at the beginning by misbehaving, she just slaps him.
