Develop interviews and questionnaires to invite students to share about their preferences, hopes, and struggles.

Based on my prior experiences as a student, I've noticed that schools often prioritize test scores and extracurriculars over students' mental health and well-being. Many children yearn to speak up about their struggles and concerns in life, but are often too worried about how their teachers will respond. 

In my future classroom, I will ensure that my students know that I deeply care about their well-being, and will do all that I can to meet their daily needs. One method in which I would achieve this goal is to routinely (bi-weekly) collect my class' survey responses and hold a "mini conference" with each student to discuss his/her preferences, hopes, and struggles for that week. I strived to explore this standard by reading ASCD magazine articles and listening to TED Talk speeches that address important revelations for how educators can modify current teaching practices to provide the best learning experiences for our students.

As educators, we must stop building environments that force our students to be stressed about grades.

In the elementary school setting, we teachers are going to stick with our 24 students for the vast majority of the entire school week. Your class will look up to you for guidance, and it's OK if we lack expertise in 1-2 areas. However, as we actively discuss new research together, we learn to truly reflect on the shortcomings of our teaching styles and share life-changing tips for designing a welcoming environment where ALL of our students are appreciated.

Technology is keeping me informed and engaged in discussions about the latest changes in education because I'm now able to use videos and other social media platforms to  learn new information and share my thoughts instantly. For instance, during my Literacy Assessment class at UMD, our class would watch video clips of teachers using their own classroom management and community-building strategies. Over the years, I realized that countless students drop out of school each year because they believe that they will never be truly accepted in the classroom by their teachers and peers. This sense of hopelessness is especially manifested when teachers fail to maintain a safe and welcoming learning environment  for their students. Thus, when I eventually become a full-fledged teacher, I must ensure that I not only meet my students' basic classroom needs, but also do all that I can to grow their passion and confidence for learning.

Students who lose their motivation to learn will gradually come view school as a never-ending chore. In order to break this cycle, teachers must ensure that they are implementing a wide range of creative strategies that encourages their students to willingly learn for themselves, and not to simply achieve good grades for college. However, it's crucial to remember that rather than providing incentives for students to participate (rewards), teachers ought to instead emphasize on helping their students to realize their goals and passions in life (through the teacher's lesson plans and teaching style).
