By using the phrase Wilson rocked himself back and forth, Fitzgerald suggests that Wilson is very broken after the death of myrtle. When Wilson is described like this it can be inferred he was destroyed by the death of Myrtle. The eyes of god (T.J. Eckleburg) looked down on these events, and Wilson saw them as the eyes of god judging everything, which in his mind meant he had to enact the punishment.

In a way, Dr. Eckleburg is the only one in the story who has been able to see everything, and judge accordingly. This makes Wilson different from everyone else in the story because it shows that he is God fearing, where everyone else believes that due to their status, they are untouchable. Wilson is the only one who isn't careless with his life or his love, leaving behind the pattern of everyone else in the book.

From this chapter you can characterize Mr. Wilson as a god fearing and Influencable man. With the statement . ‘I told her she might fool me but she couldn’t fool God. I took her to the window—’ With an effort he got up and walked to the rear window and leaned with his face pressed against it, ‘—and I said ‘God knows what you’ve been doing, ev-erything you’ve been doing. You may fool me but you can’t fool God!" We can infer that he likely lives much of his life under the same scrutiny; living up to the godly and masculine position as "man of the house" in this time. While we could imply that he lives his life with the moral dignity of God, his willingness to impose "God's will" and his punishment characterize him as a religious nutcase.
