She has three skilled workers. She has rented premises. She is proud to run her own business. Her workshop is too small and she is unable to expand. She also leases equipment.

A partnership is a small business which is usually run by between 2 - 20 people. All of these people have unlimited liability. In this case study, it is clear that Helene works by herself but as her computer repair business is small, she might want to change into a partnership in the future.

Advantages

The first advantage of Helene changing from a sole trader to a partnership is that the business will have more capital because there will be multiple people investing in the business instead of just one. With more money, the business might be able to buy their own premises and employ more workers in a larger area. If anything happens, she will be able to sell the premises and earn the money back. Also, she would not have to lease the testing equipment to earn profit and keep the equipment to themselves. The second advantages becoming a partnership is that there will be more people involved in the decision making process, offering more ideas and opinions, therefore, most likely making better decisions and solutions. She probably has a deep understanding of IT and great skills, so if she has a partner, she will be able to focus on her repair services and offer better services without having to worry about the financial or management side of the business.

Conclusion

To conclude, I think that Helen should change her business into a partnership. Currently, she operates her own IT repair business with three skilled workers and in short terms, her business is profitable (in other words it is successful). However, there will be certain limits in the future where it will be difficult for her to pay off her rent. Therefore, with the main problem of lacking finance it is efficient for her to get another partner to get more support on money. Then, she will be able to expand her business much quicker than she would when she was a sole trader. Also, when thinking in long terms, Helen would operate the business more efficiently by specializing the duties of each other once the business they finally expand their business. She wants to own her own premises and cannot do so at present so this move would enable her to fulfil this objective.

Disadvantages

One of the disadvantages of becoming a partnership business is that Helene has to share her profit with her partners. She mentions that she is proud of her profitable business and eventually have to share the profit with other partners. Another disadvantage of partnership business is unlimited liability. This means that potential new investors in Helene's computer repair business could lose all possessions if the business fails and the assets of the business including their equipment.
