When saving data to a disk, it oftens does everything it can to keep the data clustrered together, that way it's faster to load as they are all right next to eachover; however - this cannot be done so easily when the disk is low on space, it has to begin fragmenting files into smaller sizes so that it 'fill in the gaps' in empty areas of storage.

As a visual representation, we can use this:
