Possible Root Cause: Jessica might not have slept well, or at all, the night before, or something might be going on at home that has her stressed or feeling like she can't sleep.

Approach: I would definitely take this off the stage and talk one-on-one with Jessica first. I would tell her that I noticed she was sleeping and ask if she wants to share why she is feeling tired or sleeping during class. After talking with Jessica, we could plan some next-steps and brainstorm how we can make sure she's getting enough sleep prior to coming to school.

Possible Root Cause:
- Billy does not have a pencil of his own.
- Erica and Billy may have had other negative interactions that would cause Erica to have physical reaction.

Approach:
Be sure that students are no longer in a physical altercation and separate their seats. Give both students writing utensils and let them know they will have to wait after class to discuss what just happened. After class listen to both students side of the story first. Then go through steps of action that Billy can take when he does not have a pencil (aka: ask to borrow from a friend, or myself). Then go through steps with Erica that she can take in order to not put hands on others when they do something we do not like. (aka: ask the teacher for assistance).

Billy needs to be spoken to about not snatching or touching other people's belongings whereas Erica needs to be spoken about keeping her hands to herself and to ask for it back rather than shoving others.

Possible root cause: Billy might be jealous that Erica has a new pencil and wants it. Billy might not come from a financial situation at home that allows him to get mechanical pencils. He might not even have a pencil and took Erica's.

Approach: I would have these two students sit in different seats in the class. I would pull both students to the side after the lesson and have a conversation with them, letting them know that what they did is not okay. I would also try to talk to Billy independently to see why he is snatching other people's things. I would also speak to Erica independently and tell her that she has to use her words and not just snatch her things back.

Maybe she goes to bed late.

Approach: I would have a 1:1 conversation with Jessica and ask her if she is okay. I will also tell her what I have been noticing in the class and ask her to share why has she been sleeping in class. If I am addressing her quickly during class I would tell her to wash her face with cold water and come back to the classroom so she can be awake and focused. I would also let her know at the moment that it is very important that she listens. I will then follow up with her after class to figure out a solution.
