"The idea that one individual or school can give students a 'life' emanates from a problematic savior complex that results in making students, their varied experiences, their emotions, and the good in their communities invisible." (Edmin, 2016, p.20)

I believe that this photo connects with the quote because of the fact that during the Civil Rights Era, not only were blacks and minorities fighting for their rights. They were fighting to be seen, to be heard. To be known that they too matter. I think this is an important idea to hold because a lot of the times, students do feel as if they need to fight for recognition.

"... educators must create safe and trusting environments that are respectful of students' culture." (Edmin, 2016, p.27)

I feel as if this is an important point that teachers should have because of the diversity of students that American students have. Even if you are not necessarily teaching in "urban" schools, it is wise to be knowledgeable about various customs and traditions to expand horizons, not only for yourself, but for your students as well. Creating a safe place, such as this picture references, will be the best way in order to create trust.

To think that teachers could have such a negative effect on their students breaks my heart because of the fact that we're supposed to be a positive light in a child's life. And not only does that effect challenge the way that a child may view us as a person, but that it can essentially turn them off from learning altogether, which can catastrophic. I chose this picture because I feel as if it represent's common body language to know if a child is frustrated or not.

"...knowledge of the process by which these familial bonds are created, and a command of the tools that support their creation, is integral to being effective." (Edmin, 2016, p.60)

Teachers should somehow work towards creating a safe space that feels like family. I know from my personal experience that the classrooms in which student’s felt that they were respected, that they were heard, and that what they said mattered, were some of the best learning environments, and I grew as a person. These are things that need to be understood by both fellow classmates and teachers. You’ll be your most vulnerable with your family, and the classroom needs to feel like that at times. I liked this picture, not only because it shows a diversity of students, but because with one another, they create a pyramid, which is can be seen as a ladder of success.

"To be an effective black male educator for youth of color, I was being advised to erase pieces of myself and render significant pieces of who I was invisible." (Edmin, 2016, p.35)

I think it’s a horrible notion that to be a “great” anything, that you must erase a part of yourself that is such a core part of your identity. Because of who you are, you got to this point, and you’re doing what someone else in shoes might not be. I think to be an effective teacher, you should be genuine, because children can see inauthenticity. I chose this picture because a lot of the times, when you start to lose yourself, you can become lost.
