"Learning is most joyful when discovery is their own."

On Monday, February 24th, we reunited in our previous groups to finalize the central idea, guided by the students' insights. The cutouts and prompts were engaging, capturing their interest and focus. As they worked through the process, Sanjana, with her deep-thinking approach, challenged the group to refine their ideas, while Pavit reflected thoughtfully on different perspectives. Kriti and Sahir balanced creativity and logic, ensuring everyone’s voice was heard. Shivani's keen thinking helped connect ideas seamlessly, while Adhiti, as a strong communicator, articulated thoughts with clarity. Aarnav, with his vast knowledge, enriched the discussion with valuable insights.

As mentors, Ms. Aparna and I felt an overwhelming sense of pride watching them collaborate with such enthusiasm. Witnessing their joy when they uncovered the central idea on their own was a reminder of why we do what we do—guiding, but ultimately letting them lead their own learning journey.

Our exhibition journey took an exciting turn today as we first conducted a poll to finalize the central idea, ensuring every student's voice was heard.

Once decided, students were regrouped and paired with their mentors through a lottery system.

Ms. Agata and I guided our group, where Ms. Agata explained how Lines of Inquiry (LOIs) are structured, emphasizing clarity, depth, and connection to the central idea.

After much discussion and collaboration, the students finalized the central idea:
"People express their emotions through art and technology to reshape the world."

To spark deeper thinking, students engaged in various provocations, leading to insightful discussions. The lines of inquiry they developed were:

Understanding different perspectives

Understanding emotions

Understanding emotions through art and technology

Impact of emotions

Evolution of art and technology

The inquiry process was truly engaging, with Sahana showing immense curiosity about understanding people's emotions, diving deeper into their expressions and variations. Shaunak was an active participant, asking thought-provoking questions and contributing significantly, especially on the impact of emotions. Zoe explored how emotions are reacted to and showcased, adding another perspective to the discussion. Shraddini focused on the theme of change, critically analyzing how art and technology reshape the world. Neha, on the other hand, was quietly observing and making notes, deepening her understanding through thoughtful reflection. The discussions on technology sparked Shaunak’s interest in ICT tools, while Sahana explored the role of art in technology.

To add value and guide the inquiry of our central idea, we mentors framed key guiding statements that will lead our next steps. The session was a blend of fun and challenge, filled with moments of deep thinking, inquiry, and collaboration—just the kind of environment where meaningful learning unfolds!

They had a thoughtful discussion about what art and technology mean from their perspective. We also explored different forms of art in class, including visual art, music, dance, and drama, with brief explanations of each. To reflect on their thoughts, each student was given a tulip to write about their perspectives on art and technology. For homework, they are tasked with researching the fusion of art and technology. We are looking forward to tomorrow when we’ll complete our KWL chart and wrap up with exit tickets.

As students embarked on an immersive journey through various art forms, they cultivated a profound understanding of the distinct characteristics that define each medium, including the unique materials, techniques, and expressive elements that artists employ to convey their visions. Through introspective journal reflections, students identified the most valuable insights they gained from participating in activities, such as the crucial role of composition, texture, and shape in visual arts, the emotional resonance of color and light in painting, and the rhythmic patterns and melodic motifs that underpin music. Moreover, students explored the intricate relationships between key concepts - Form, Causation, Change, and Perspective - and their manifestations in different art forms, recognizing how artists deliberately manipulate these elements to convey meaning, evoke emotions, and challenge perceptions. For instance, they observed how the strategic use of perspective in painting can create a sense of depth and distance, drawing the viewer into the artwork, while the innovative manipulation of form and texture in sculpture can evoke emotions, spark imagination, and challenge societal norms. As students completed exit tickets, they articulated their learning, reflecting on how engaging with various art forms enhanced their understanding of artistic characteristics, and mentors reviewed journal entries, providing constructive feedback that encouraged students to think critically, make connections between art and real-world interpretations, and develop a nuanced appreciation for the complex interplay between key concepts and artistic expression. Ultimately, this comprehensive session fostered a richer, more multifaceted understanding of key concepts and their applications across diverse art forms and cultures, empowering students to approach art with a deeper level of insight, creativity, and critical thinking.

Today was an exciting and engaging day! As mentors, we reviewed the children’s journals and provided feedback, where they creatively demonstrated their understanding of the topics and built their knowledge step by step. We also summarized the activities from day one in a brief six-line recap. The children selected pink and yellow chits, representing their chosen categories: 1 for music, dance, and drama, and 2 for visual literacy and technology. To deepen their understanding, we displayed reading materials on art and technology. For homework, the children were assigned to read and research the material, preparing to answer related questions in the next class.

Today's objective was to facilitate students' reflection on their understanding, receive mentor feedback, and make choices for upcoming activities. The 30-minute lesson commenced with a mentor-led journal review and feedback, where mentors corrected and checked student reflections, providing individual feedback in the form of typed and printed anecdotal notes. Students then attached this feedback to their journals, allowing them to track their progress and growth.

Next, students presented their home assignments, showcasing their learning and participation. Teachers and mentors reviewed their choices, entry, and exit tickets, offering praise and encouragement. Following the presentations, students engaged in a choice-based selection activity, where they chose one option from each category using a provided template. The categories included dance, singing, drama, literary, visual, and technology. Teachers collected the responses and created groups accordingly.

To conclude the lesson, teachers assigned a reading on "Art & Technology" and asked students to answer two critical thinking questions: How has technology influenced the way art is created and experienced? Do you think art and technology should always work together? Why or why not? This activity encouraged critical thinking and reflection. Finally, teachers reminded students to come prepared for a surprise activity in the next session.

Today’s session was an engaging exploration of Form, Causation, Change, and Perspective in art. Students revisited their previous experiences with different art forms, reflecting on how materials, techniques, and artistic intent shape an artwork’s final outcome.

We started with a discussion on the defining characteristics of various art forms, encouraging students to think critically about how form and function work together in artistic expression. Through guided questions, they explored why artists create, how historical and cultural influences shape art, and how innovation drives change in artistic styles and mediums.

One of the most thought-provoking discussions centered around perspective, as students debated how personal background and culture influence artistic interpretation. They examined how two people can see the same artwork in completely different ways, reinforcing the idea that art is subjective and deeply connected to identity.

To conclude, students began their journal reflections, applying at least two key concepts to their experiences with different art forms. They also completed exit tickets to capture their biggest takeaways. Their insights demonstrated a growing appreciation for artistic evolution and the power of creativity in shaping perspectives.

Today, we didn’t just discuss art—we experienced and understood it in new ways. 🎨✨

Art has the power to inspire, provoke thought, and evoke emotions. However, true artistic appreciation goes beyond simply recognizing a famous painting or admiring its beauty—it requires deeper inquiry, analysis, and reflection. Our recent exploration into artistic expressions took students on a journey from surface-level observations to meaningful interpretations, demonstrating how structured learning experiences can enhance artistic literacy.

The Pre-Assessment: Where We Began

To understand our students’ initial perceptions of art, we conducted a pre-assessment where they were asked to choose a picture and describe what they knew about it. Their responses varied:

Some students, like Sahir, struggled to articulate their thoughts and simply stated they didn’t know anything.

Others, like Charmita and Aditi, recognized famous artworks such as Starry Night and The Last Supper, though they couldn’t always name the artists.

A few, like Neha, misinterpreted the task, describing unrelated images instead of analyzing the given artworks.

This activity highlighted key areas for growth—students needed exposure to artistic techniques, terminology, and the deeper meaning behind artworks.

The Learning Experience: Engaging with Art

To bridge this gap, we designed a series of activities that encouraged students to interact with art in a more meaningful way:

1. Exploring Famous Artists and Their Expressions

Students were introduced to prominent artists and their works through a PowerPoint presentation and reading materials. They explored different artistic movements such as:

Pop Art – Bold colors, commercial imagery, and vibrant expression.

Cubism – Geometric deconstruction of objects and perspectives.

Color Blending & Depth – Techniques that add perspective and realism to artwork.

During an inquiry session with Ms. Anitha, students engaged in discussions about these styles. Their observations deepened as they reflected on concepts like symbolism, contrast, and perspective.

2. Reflective Learning Through Journals

To encourage personal engagement with the content, students maintained learning journals where they answered key reflection questions:

What did we see?

What did we do?

What did we understand?

How did we feel about this?

Through these reflections, students connected artistic techniques to emotions, storytelling, and historical context, gradually shifting from basic observations to critical analysis.

3. Extending Learning Beyond the Classroom

To reinforce their understanding, students were given a home task consisting of:

Biography information of famous artists

A timeline of art movements

A supporting video for deeper comprehension

Students were asked to complete their journal reflections in class and then use the provided materials to create a chart presentation. Each student selected two artists and explored:

Their biography and artistic contributions

The impact of their work on the art world

How these artists inspired them personally

This activity encouraged students to not only research and analyze but also express their personal connections to art, making the learning experience more meaningful.

The Transformation: A New Lens for Art

By the end of this journey, we saw a remarkable transformation in students’ artistic literacy. When they revisited the same images from their pre-assessment, their responses reflected a much deeper understanding:

Sahir, who initially described the ocean as "sad" and "fearful," now analyzed how the shades of blue created depth and movement.

Neha, who once merely stated, “I like flowers,” now identified Van Gogh’s Sunflowers as a symbol of happiness, discussing the artist’s expressive use of bright colors.

Shraddha, who previously described a bird simply as "red," now examined its symbolism of freedom and the role of perspective in flight.

Aditi connected an image to storytelling, recognizing themes from Rabindranath Tagore’s works.

This shift demonstrated not only a stronger grasp of artistic vocabulary but also a newfound confidence in expressing artistic interpretations.

Final Reflections: The Power of Inquiry-Based Learning

This journey reaffirmed the power of structured exploration, discussion, and reflection in deepening students’ understanding of art. By moving beyond passive observation, students developed critical thinking skills, an appreciation for artistic intent, and the ability to articulate their insights.

As we continue this path of inquiry, we aim to foster even greater artistic awareness, ensuring that every student can engage with and appreciate art in a meaningful way.

Our gratitude to Ms. Kamini for meticulously preparing the PowerPoint presentations and flashcards, which sparked curiosity and engagement among the students.

A Journey Through Time and Sound

On Day 11 of our musical exploration, the children took a journey through the rich history of music, exploring key timelines that shaped sound—from early melodies to modern harmonies. They were introduced to medieval music, a time when music was closely tied to culture, religion, and community life.

The children learned about two essential forms from this era: monophony and polyphony. Monophony, a single melodic line without accompaniment, was a key feature of early music, like Gregorian chants. The students engaged with this style, appreciating its simplicity and meditative nature. In contrast, polyphony, where multiple melodies intertwine, emerged later, adding depth and complexity. The children explored how these layers of sound create harmony and how voices and instruments work together.

In the afternoon, the children composed their own songs, blending elements of both monophonic and polyphonic styles. With the band, they brought their compositions to life, deepening their understanding of medieval music while fostering creativity and teamwork.

As part of the PYP exhibition, this experience reflects their growth in both musical knowledge and creative expression, showing how music transcends time and culture to unite us all.

Ms. Anitha led a captivating presentation on the evolution of art, guiding students through each slide with detailed explanations about the artists, the time periods, the inspirations behind the works, and the fundamental tools used to create them. The session was highly engaging, with students actively contributing their thoughts and insights.

Charmita, demonstrating her knowledgeable nature, initiated a discussion on cave paintings, suggesting that they could be from prehistoric times. Sahir, displaying his thinker skills, immediately built on this by mentioning the materials early humans might have used, such as stone. Other students followed with their own contributions—Aditi, showing her inquirer spirit, spoke about pigments; Pragyna, as a reflective learner, mentioned animal skin; and Sai, exemplifying communicator traits, contributed the idea of bones.

Shraddini, being an open-minded thinker, shared that early paintings were a means of passing information, which Ms. Anitha connected to the concept of linear perspectives. Shreya, a risk-taker, added that storytelling played a crucial role in these paintings, while others noted that art was also a way of expressing emotions.

As the discussion moved to later artistic eras, Shreya posed an intriguing question: why is the Mona Lisa so famous? Sahir, demonstrating his knowledgeable side once again, surprised the class by recalling that the painting had once been stolen, a fact he had read somewhere. This unexpected detail momentarily shifted the class’s focus, sparking curiosity and excitement.

Adding to the depth of the lesson, Yajun and Narim, both demonstrating their open-minded and balanced traits, read the printed materials in Korean about the evolution of art, enriching the understanding further. Ms. Kamini played a vital role in ensuring the session ran smoothly, preparing the necessary materials, taking anecdotal notes, and providing support to Yajun and Narim. Throughout the session, she ensured every student had space to share their thoughts.

The students were then assigned to create a timeline tracing the chronological development of various art forms as their home assignment. To conclude the session, we provided them with printouts featuring artworks based on realism and cubism. As they colored, their choices of shades and tones beautifully reflected their moods and emotions, making the experience both personal and expressive.

Dear Team,

Today’s session was truly enriching for the students. They had a great time engaging in hands-on activities, including the cave painting and Chinese pottery coloring led by Ms. Anitha. It was wonderful to see their creativity come to life through these artistic expressions.

A special mention to Ms. Gayathri, who encouraged deep thinking by asking insightful questions and capturing meaningful anecdotes from the students. Their reflections were particularly heartwarming, as they not only shared their learning but also thought about how to explain it to a friend who was absent—a beautiful demonstration of empathy and collaborative learning.

Here are some student anecdotes that highlight their learning and growth, linked to key ATL skills and the IB Learner Profile:

Pragna (Communication & Reflective): "I think early humans were like us! They also wanted to tell stories, but they didn't have words, so they used drawings. It makes me think—if we didn’t have words today, how would we tell our stories?"

Sai (Research & Thinker): "They made colors from bones, mud, and flowers. I wonder if we can still make paints like that today without using chemicals."

Aditi (Self-Management & Knowledgeable): "They used pigments and mixed them with mud. This means they were experimenting with materials just like scientists do today!"

Charita (Social & Inquirer): "I told my friend who was absent that we learned how early humans used art to communicate, and now I want to create my own story using symbols instead of words!"

Sneha (Creative Thinking & Open-Minded): "If early humans used paintings to share information, maybe today’s emojis are like modern cave paintings!"

Shraddini (Research & Communicator): "Cave paintings helped people pass information. Maybe it was their way of writing books before writing was invented!"

Sahir (Critical Thinking & Reflective): "They had no paper, no pens, but they still managed to leave messages for us. I wonder what they wanted to tell us about their lives."

Neha (Curiosity & Risk-Taker): "I want to try making my own natural paints at home, just like early humans. What if I mix fruit colors? Will it work?"

Yajun (Korean Student – Open-Minded & Communicator): "In Korea, we also have old paintings on rocks. They tell stories like these cave paintings. Maybe ancient people everywhere wanted to communicate this way."

Narin (Korean Student – Thinker & Inquirer): "I like how they used shapes in their paintings. They understood size, shapes, and patterns even without knowing numbers!"

Jitesh (Collaboration & Principled): "We worked together and helped each other with our drawings. Maybe that’s what early humans also did—shared their knowledge to make something better!"

The students were genuinely excited, and their enthusiasm was evident in their engagement and reflections. This session truly encouraged creative thinking, inquiry, and communication, bringing history and art to life in a meaningful way.

Thank you all for making this such an impactful learning experience!

They received constructive feedback to refine their work, with Mithun and Abdul encouraged to add more details to their artist biographies.

Following this, students had the opportunity to present their biography charts on various drama artists. Nakshatra confidently started her presentation on Girish Karnad. While she presented well, she was advised to rely less on the chart and speak with greater confidence. She accepted the feedback positively and committed to refining her presentation for the next day.

The session then transitioned into an engaging discussion on the importance of comparative analysis in theater. Viab showcased his understanding by explaining that comparing and contrasting helps identify both similarities and differences. The mentors introduced various methods of conducting comparative studies, including T-charts, Venn diagrams, tabular formats, mind maps, storyboards, and fishbone structures. The students grasped the concept well and were briefed on their home task based on this study.

In preparation for their upcoming presentation, the students practiced their mime act with music and choreographed steps. Their enthusiasm was evident as they immersed themselves in learning the act effortlessly.

For the group drama activity, the students were captivated by the narrated story of Pandi the Cat and Indie the Dog. The entire class was drawn into the world of storytelling, making it a truly immersive experience. Sanjana and Raghav demonstrated remarkable acting skills, bringing the narrative to life with their expressive performances. As the story progressed, more students joined in, making it a collaborative and interactive activity. To conclude, the drama teacher presented the class with a situational exercise where everyone had the chance to enact different scenarios, ensuring full engagement from all students.

Overall, it was a dynamic and enriching session filled with creativity, learning, and active participation.

Exploring Pottery Through the Art Timeline: A Journey of Creativity and Expression

As part of their art timeline exploration, students recently embarked on an exciting journey into pottery, discovering the styles and techniques of ancient Chinese and Greek pottery. The activity allowed them to learn about the color choices, patterns, and cultural significance of these ancient art forms, while also sparking their creativity and critical thinking.

Immersed in Monochromatic Blues

Students began by working with monochromatic shades of blue, inspired by the traditional Chinese porcelain and Greek pottery designs. The limited color palette initially excited them, but it also raised some curious questions.

Charmitha and Shreya inquisitively asked, "Why don’t we use red?" They were fascinated by the historical significance of blue and white but wondered why warmer tones were not part of the color scheme. This demonstrated their curiosity and inquiry skills, essential parts of the IB learner profile.

On the other hand, Yajun found the two-color restriction stifling, expressing his dissatisfaction with the limited creative freedom. His reflective nature led him to explore ways of making his artwork more unique, experimenting with different brush strokes and patterns.

Narim, however, was overjoyed when she received extra sheets for coloring. She enthusiastically completed her task and requested two additional sheets, showing her passion for art and commitment to practice.

Learner Profiles in Action

Throughout the activity, students exhibited various IB learner profile attributes:

Pragya demonstrated her knowledgeable and open-minded attitude. She attentively absorbed the history behind the art forms and embraced the cultural differences with curiosity and respect.

Meanwhile, Sai and Jitesh, initially less interested in the pottery task, gradually found their groove during the group activity. Their teamwork and growing engagement were evident as they worked collaboratively to create organic colors using maida (flour) and food colors, crafting vibrant paper flowers for the upcoming Holi celebration.

A Burst of Creativity: Paper Flower Making

The paper flower activity, led by Ms. Vaishnavi and Ms. Uthra, along with Ms. Aparna, Ms. Deepti, and Ms. Anitha, turned into a highlight of the day. The students thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on experience, mixing and blending colors to create vivid and artistic flowers. Their excitement reflected not just their creative expression but also their fine motor skill development and collaboration.

Expressing Art Through Emotion

The final activity was a unique blind art expression task, designed to spark imagination and creativity. Students were asked to draw without looking at their paper, relying only on their emotions and movements. The resulting artworks were abstract and sometimes incomprehensible at first glance.

Some drawings seemed disconnected or chaotic, while others took on surprising shapes. However, when the students were asked to describe their pieces, their reflections were profound.

One student shared, “It didn’t turn out how I imagined, but it’s better than I thought.”

Another commented, “I wanted to draw something specific, but the result surprised me.”
Their reflections revealed creativity, self-awareness, and resilience, highlighting the value of process over perfection.

An Artistic Celebration of Expression

Through this art timeline exploration, students not only learned about ancient Chinese and Greek pottery but also enhanced their critical thinking, creativity, and self-expression. The activities sparked inquiry, open-mindedness, and communication, key IB learner profile traits, while preparing them for a joyful Holi celebration filled with colorful, student-made flowers.

The experience left students with a deeper appreciation for art, an understanding of its historical evolution, and the freedom to express their emotions and perspectives through creative forms.

Little Artists at Work: Exploring Creativity Through Hands-On Art

Art is not just about colors and brushes—it’s about expression, exploration, and the joy of creating something unique. Recently, our students embarked on a delightful artistic journey, engaging in diverse activities such as balloon printing, blow painting, bubble wrap art, and even cave painting with mud. Each experience opened a new door to creativity, allowing them to think, feel, and express like true little artists.

A World of Colors and Textures

Every technique introduced in these sessions brought a fresh perspective to art. Balloon printing allowed students to explore patterns and textures in a playful way. As they pressed the balloons dipped in paint onto paper, they watched in amazement as vibrant circles formed, sparking discussions about shapes, color blending, and pressure application.

Blow painting turned the classroom into a fun and dynamic space where students controlled the flow of paint with their breath. This activity was not only an artistic endeavor but also a lesson in patience and control, as they discovered how air could guide the movement of colors in unexpected ways.

With bubble wrap printing, children excitedly dipped the bumpy plastic into paint and stamped it onto their canvases. The results? Stunning, textured patterns that mimicked nature—rain drops, honeycombs, or even distant galaxies. This activity deepened their understanding of textures and the artistic potential of everyday materials.

Perhaps the most immersive experience was cave painting with mud. Inspired by ancient art, students used their hands, twigs, and natural pigments to create symbols and patterns, connecting them to the earliest forms of human expression. The earthy smell of mud and the tactile engagement with natural elements made this activity particularly special, reminding them that art exists beyond paper and paint.

The Joy of Being Little Artists

Throughout these activities, students experienced a spectrum of emotions—excitement, curiosity, and pure joy. Some felt empowered as they controlled the direction of their blow-painted lines, while others were fascinated by the unpredictability of balloon printing. The sensory nature of mud painting brought laughter and a deep appreciation for nature’s gifts.

As they explored these techniques, their confidence as artists blossomed. They learned that art isn’t about perfection—it’s about expression, experimentation, and enjoying the process. Every splatter, every smear, and every pattern became a story, a unique creation that reflected their individuality.

A Lasting Impression

Watching these young minds at work was a reminder that art is a language of the soul. Through play and discovery, they embraced creativity without fear, free from the constraints of predefined rules. These experiences will not only stay with them as cherished memories but will also nurture a lifelong love for artistic expression.

As they stepped back to admire their creations, their faces glowed with pride—because in those moments, they weren’t just students. They were artists.
