On Monday, February 24th, we reunited in our previous groups to finalize the central idea, guided by the students' insights. The cutouts and prompts were engaging, capturing their interest and focus. As they worked through the process, Sanjana, with her deep-thinking approach, challenged the group to refine their ideas, while Pavit reflected thoughtfully on different perspectives. Kriti and Sahir balanced creativity and logic, ensuring everyone’s voice was heard. Shivani's keen thinking helped connect ideas seamlessly, while Adhiti, as a strong communicator, articulated thoughts with clarity. Aarnav, with his vast knowledge, enriched the discussion with valuable insights.

As mentors, Ms. Aparna and I felt an overwhelming sense of pride watching them collaborate with such enthusiasm. Witnessing their joy when they uncovered the central idea on their own was a reminder of why we do what we do—guiding, but ultimately letting them lead their own learning journey.

Once decided, students were regrouped and paired with their mentors through a lottery system.

Ms. Agata and I guided our group, where Ms. Agata explained how Lines of Inquiry (LOIs) are structured, emphasizing clarity, depth, and connection to the central idea.

After much discussion and collaboration, the students finalized the central idea:

Neha, on the other hand, was quietly observing and making notes, deepening her understanding through thoughtful reflection. To add value and guide the inquiry of our central idea, we mentors framed key guiding statements that will lead our next steps. The session was a blend of fun and challenge, filled with moments of deep thinking, inquiry, and collaboration—just the kind of environment where meaningful learning unfolds!

At the end of the session, an exit ticket was given to encourage reflection on their work. We’re all excited and looking forward to yet another interesting session with the children tomorrow.

On Day 11 of our musical exploration, the children took a journey through the rich history of music, exploring key timelines that shaped sound—from early melodies to modern harmonies. They were introduced to medieval music, a time when music was closely tied to culture, religion, and community life.

The children learned about two essential forms from this era: monophony and polyphony. Monophony, a single melodic line without accompaniment, was a key feature of early music, like Gregorian chants. The students engaged with this style, appreciating its simplicity and meditative nature. In contrast, polyphony, where multiple melodies intertwine, emerged later, adding depth and complexity. The children explored how these layers of sound create harmony and how voices and instruments work together.

In the afternoon, the children composed their own songs, blending elements of both monophonic and polyphonic styles. With the band, they brought their compositions to life, deepening their understanding of medieval music while fostering creativity and teamwork.

In the next segment, students worked on completing their biography charts about famous drama artists. It was wonderful to see how the students applied their creativity and organizational skills in preparing the charts. Each student took a thoughtful approach, ensuring that the information was both informative and visually appealing.

A special mention goes to Arnav, Mithun, and Shaunak, who presented their work to the class. They spoke confidently, clearly articulating the contributions of the artists they had researched. Their presentations were well-organized, and they shared interesting insights that demonstrated a deep understanding of their subjects.

Charmita, demonstrating her knowledgeable nature, initiated a discussion on cave paintings, suggesting that they could be from prehistoric times. Sahir, displaying his thinker skills, immediately built on this by mentioning the materials early humans might have used, such as stone. Other students followed with their own contributions—Aditi, showing her inquirer spirit, spoke about pigments; Pragyna, as a reflective learner, mentioned animal skin; and Sai, exemplifying communicator traits, contributed the idea of bones.

Shraddini, being an open-minded thinker, shared that early paintings were a means of passing information, which Ms. Anitha connected to the concept of linear perspectives. Shreya, a risk-taker, added that storytelling played a crucial role in these paintings, while others noted that art was also a way of expressing emotions.

As the discussion moved to later artistic eras, Shreya posed an intriguing question: why is the Mona Lisa so famous? Sahir, demonstrating his knowledgeable side once again, surprised the class by recalling that the painting had once been stolen, a fact he had read somewhere. This unexpected detail momentarily shifted the class’s focus, sparking curiosity and excitement.

Adding to the depth of the lesson, Yajun and Narim, both demonstrating their open-minded and balanced traits, read the printed materials in Korean about the evolution of art, enriching the understanding further. Ms. Kamini played a vital role in ensuring the session ran smoothly, preparing the necessary materials, taking anecdotal notes, and providing support to Yajun and Narim. Throughout the session, she ensured every student had space to share their thoughts.

The students were then assigned to create a timeline tracing the chronological development of various art forms as their home assignment. To conclude the session, we provided them with printouts featuring artworks based on realism and cubism. As they colored, their choices of shades and tones beautifully reflected their moods and emotions, making the experience both personal and expressive.

The experience was a wonderful reminder of the power of trusting one’s creativity.

To add to the day’s excitement, as part of the Holi celebrations, each child was given a surprise takeaway—organic powder mixed with colors, adding a festive touch to the occasion. The children reveled in the joy of the celebration, knowing they were taking home a piece of the vibrant spirit of Holi.

Today was filled with laughter, discovery, and a burst of color, making it an unforgettable day for all the children.

Preetha Lakshmi thoughtfully explored characters, themes, and messages in literature while discussing author Sudha Murthy. She reflected on different viewpoints and recognized the ethical themes in the author's works as she spoke about them.

Aarnav demonstrated an open-minded approach to literary studies by exploring cultural perspectives. He appreciated Charles Dickens' work by discussing different viewpoints in his stories and respecting the themes and messages in his books. This reflects his thoughtful and inclusive reading skills.

Vaiv clearly expressed his interpretations of stories while discussing author Jeff Kinney. He thoroughly explored the author's literary style and context, enhancing his understanding of literature.

To reinforce prior learning, Mr. Georgie conducted a quiz based on the previous session. Students were enthusiastic and actively reflected on their understanding of drama artists and theatre types. Raghav, Sanjana, Jitesh, Aarnav, and Vaiv demonstrated curiosity and active engagement, while Shivani, Shaunak, and Mithun appeared distracted and struggled to respond. As an extension of the session, students chose their preferred drama artist to create a biography chart, fostering research skills, creativity, and critical thinking.

As part of Drama Art, students worked on colouring masks used in various theatres. Mentors guided them on how to blend monochromatic shades to give the masks an ancient, authentic look. This activity allowed students to develop their observation skills, creativity, and patience, helping them understand how colours can be used to convey history and emotion.

Later, students took part in a creative paper flower-making activity. Using simple materials like coloured paper, straws, scissors, and glue, they discovered the beauty of transforming everyday objects into personalized gifts—a meaningful way to express gratitude. They worked beyond expectations, showcasing fine motor skills, craftsmanship, and a deep sense of appreciation for handmade art.

Overall, today’s session successfully blended drama, art, and creativity, allowing students to explore self-expression while developing artistic and cognitive skills. Their enthusiasm and dedication set a positive tone for further creative exploration.

Later, children engaged in a dance activity, where they explored how movement and rhythm serve as a powerful means of expressing emotions. The session encouraged students to be open-minded, reflective, and communicative.

Using a variety of art materials, including color pencils, crayons, brush pens, and oil pastels, the children brought their chosen pictures to life with vibrant colors and meticulous attention to detail. The end result was truly impressive, with each child producing a unique and beautifully colored piece of art.

Their hard work and creativity were duly recognized and appreciated, fostering a sense of pride and accomplishment in each child.

Today’s session was truly enriching for the students. They had a great time engaging in hands-on activities, including the cave painting and Chinese pottery coloring led by Ms. Anitha. It was wonderful to see their creativity come to life through these artistic expressions.

Following this, students had the opportunity to present their biography charts on various drama artists. Nakshatra confidently started her presentation on Girish Karnad. While she presented well, she was advised to rely less on the chart and speak with greater confidence. She accepted the feedback positively and committed to refining her presentation for the next day.

The session then transitioned into an engaging discussion on the importance of comparative analysis in theater. Viab showcased his understanding by explaining that comparing and contrasting helps identify both similarities and differences. The mentors introduced various methods of conducting comparative studies, including T-charts, Venn diagrams, tabular formats, mind maps, storyboards, and fishbone structures. The students grasped the concept well and were briefed on their home task based on this study.

In preparation for their upcoming presentation, the students practiced their mime act with music and choreographed steps. Their enthusiasm was evident as they immersed themselves in learning the act effortlessly.

For the group drama activity, the students were captivated by the narrated story of Pandi the Cat and Indie the Dog. The entire class was drawn into the world of storytelling, making it a truly immersive experience. Sanjana and Raghav demonstrated remarkable acting skills, bringing the narrative to life with their expressive performances. As the story progressed, more students joined in, making it a collaborative and interactive activity. To conclude, the drama teacher presented the class with a situational exercise where everyone had the chance to enact different scenarios, ensuring full engagement from all students.

Students began by working with monochromatic shades of blue, inspired by the traditional Chinese porcelain and Greek pottery designs. The limited color palette initially excited them, but it also raised some curious questions.

• Charmitha and Shreya inquisitively asked, "Why don’t we use red?" They were fascinated by the historical significance of blue and white but wondered why warmer tones were not part of the color scheme. This demonstrated their curiosity and inquiry skills, essential parts of the IB learner profile.

• On the other hand, Yajun found the two-color restriction stifling, expressing his dissatisfaction with the limited creative freedom. His reflective nature led him to explore ways of making his artwork more unique, experimenting with different brush strokes and patterns.

• Narim, however, was overjoyed when she received extra sheets for coloring. She enthusiastically completed her task and requested two additional sheets, showing her passion for art and commitment to practice.

Sahir, having completed all his assignments, showcased his creativity by creating a mini painting on perspective, demonstrating his enthusiasm and artistic flair. Charmitha was encouraged to work faster to catch up on her pending tasks, while Yajun was requested to transform his artist timeline into a 3D model, adding a creative dimension to his project. Sai and Neha were reminded to complete their sheets in the exhibition journal, ensuring they were on track for the upcoming presentation. PYP 5 Exhibition Update

Our young musicians have been busy preparing for their upcoming performance! They've been rehearsing their song with instruments, fine-tuning their skills and harmonies.

In addition to music, our students have been working diligently on their timeline charts, showcasing their learning journey. The charts are not only informative but also visually stunning, with creative decorations and beautiful borders.

To further enhance their understanding, the children are crafting 3D models of instruments, which will be ready by Monday. This hands-on approach is helping them develop a deeper appreciation for the intricacies of music.

Throughout this process, our students have been reflecting on their learning, writing thoughtful insights at the end of each class. Their journals have been carefully corrected, providing valuable feedback for further growth.

Henry BTS:

Rafael - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart:
