I always thought children could continue to learn "the old school way" because it worked for us. What I failed to recognize is that they shouldn't have to. I sometimes find myself thinking technology is only negative or harming, and I don't give it the positive credit it sometimes deserves. - Vicki Reilly

What confirmed my thinking was when it said, "...they have a greater chance of growing up selfish and expecting instant gratification." I am guilty of expecting this from them. As a new mom of a 7 month old, oftentimes I find myself making it a goal to not let this happen to him all while having to work against some of these new findings, technologies, ways of life, etc. OR a better way to work WITH them. - Vicki Reilly

Oftentimes as someone older with more experiences and responsibilities, I can think, "They don't know what busy is!!!" But then I remember being in high school, and there are few people busier than a teenager especially today! - Vicki Reilly

Gen Z = I have been one to think that old teaching methods could get anyone through school only because that's how I was taught. Now I wonder what school would have been like for me if it were set up in the way this video presented it. I wonder if I would've loved learning more if it was more hands on, collaborative, and if I felt like I was contributing to my learning. - Vicki Reilly

I see now that the Alpha Gen are motivated and learn best visually and with video rather than verbal and written communication. Kids as young as 2 can be learning about concepts through video that they normally wouldn't even touch on until their later elementary years due to their reading ability. The challenge then becomes how do we meet the needs of each student's preferences in learning while also giving them the foundations of reading and writing.
Hilary Yahner

Generation Alpha will only know a world with instant gratification. They can watch and learn what they want, when they want with the push of a button. Life moves very quickly for them. Cut to school, where we ask them to sit in a seat for long periods of time without talking, wait your turn (out of 25 kids), do this worksheet at the class' pace and wait 1-5 days for feedback, don't move ahead or fall behind, etc I hear it over and over again, "These kids are so different." Why, yes, they are, because the world they know is completely different than the world my generation and older once knew.
Hilary Yahner
