Jing-Mei's mother wants her to be a successful prodigy, as stated many times throughout the story when she would compare her to successful kids in magazines or on TV. For example, in paragraph 10, the author states "She would present new tests, taking her examples from stories of amazing children that she read in Ripley's Believe It or Not or Good Housekeeping, Read's digest, or any of a dozen other magazines... She would look through them all, searching for stories about remarkable children." This shows that Jing-Mei's mother has high expectations for her and wants her to be a remarkable Child prodigy.

Jing-Mei's desires differ from that of her mother in that Jing-Mei's desires are just do enough to make her herself happy, and her mother's desires of Jing-Mei being beyond that and becoming extremely successful. We can assume they are different because of their upbringings, the mother being from China and having to leave everything behind and starting from a low and Jing- Mei growing up not having to start from the same low as her mother did.

Jing-Mei's mother has high expectations for her because she lost so much including her other children back in China. For example, in paragraph 69, the author states, "And that's when I remembered the babies she had lost in China, the ones we never talked about. 'Then I wish I'd never been born!' I shouted, 'I wish I were dead! Like them." In this scene Jing-Mei yells this after her mother was forcing her to play the piano even though she failed the talent show. The importance of this scene is that it can explain why her mother has been making her do all of the things that her other children were never able to do.

The Story is entitled "Two Kinds" because it emphasizes the mothers thoughts on her daughter. It supports this in paragraph 65, the mother says "'only two kinds of daughters,' she shouted in Chinese. 'Those who are obedient and those who follow their own mind! Only one kind of daughter can live in this house. Obedient daughter!" This is the climax of the story and is important because the tension between Jing-Mei and her mother breaks, causing a fight. The importance of this event is emphasized through the title, saying that there are only two kinds of daughters, and she will not support the kind of daughter that Jing-Mei is

Some examples of internal conflict is Jing-Mei wanting to me this child prodigy like her mother wants but knowing she will never be like those kids and she will constantly disappoint her mom. As the author states in paragraph 14, "And after seeing, once again, my mother's disappointed face, something inside me began to die. I hated the tests, the raised hopes and failed expectation. Before going to bed that night I looked in the mirror above the bathroom sink, and I saw only my face staring back-and understood that it would always be this ordinary face- I began to cry. Such a sad, ugly girl! I made high- pitched noises like a crazed animal, trying to scratch out the face in the mirror"

An example of external conflict in "Two Kinds" is was when Jing-Mei couldn't play the piano at the talent show. The conflict was she was nervous and despite practicing she still had stage fright costing her her reputation.
