MORE started in the winter semester 2015/16 as a pilot project at some universities to give people with a refugee background access to public universities and thus to a reality away from reception centres. Very quickly, all 22 Austrian universities took part in the initiative, for example by providing a certain number of places in selected courses or offering their own courses for applicants with a refugee background. Over the course of five years, approximately 3,500 MORE students have taken advantage of this broad offer.

For more info, visit: https://uniko.ac.at/themen/more/was-ist-more/

The Student Refugee Program combines resettlement with opportunities for higher education. Launched in 1978 with the placement of one student at Carleton University, the program has since grown to support over 150 students per year through active partnerships with over 100 Canadian university, college, and CEGEP campuses.

As an official Sponsorship Agreement Holder in Canada, WUSC has a longstanding agreement with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. This agreement enables us to bring refugee students to study in Canada as permanent residents. WUSC identifies refugee students who are in need of resettlement and grants permission to WUSC Local Committees at post-secondary institutions across Canada to sponsor in WUSC’s name.

Crucial to the program’s success is its unique youth-to-youth sponsorship model which empowers students in Canada to play an active role in the sponsorship of refugee students. Local Committees raise funds and awareness for the program on their campus and in their community. They also play a critical role in offering day-to-day social and academic support to newly-arrived students.

Going beyond resettlement, the Student Refugee Program also provides an innovative pathway to integration for young refugees. A 2007 study found that 97% of sponsored students had completed or were in the process of completing their post-secondary program with many intending to further their education. 85% had found work in their chosen fields after graduation.

For more info, visit: https://srp.wusc.ca/about/

Change in Exile project: Re-invigorating Principles of Reform and Social Stability amongst Young, Syrian Refugees in Denmark and Lebanon, the FACE (Fund for Academic Cooperation and Exchange between Denmark and the Arab World) project.

Re-invigorating principles of reform and social stability amongst young Syrian refugees in Denmark and Lebanon was an 8 month project funded by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs under their Danish Arab Partnership Programme / Fund for Academic Cooperation and Exchange between Denmark and the Arab World. Roskilde University in Denmark and Alert International in Lebanon were the main partners. Together we were looking at the role of formal and informal education activities in fostering socially meaningful interactions and encounters between young Syrian refugees and their Danish / Lebanese counterparts in their respective host societies (in our case Denmark and Lebanon).

In Denmark, although officially we have a pluralistic integration policy – where everybody lives together and can maintain their respective cultural practices, in reality Denmark has an assimilationist policy. Denmark’s benchmark of “successful assimilation” is one of successful individual inclusion and acculturation to the mores of Danish life. The Danish integration programme that all refugees have to undertake is now offered from one up to five years. In the formal education system refugees under 18 years of age participate in special programmes within the public school system. Once they achieve a Danish language level of 2 (Danish 2) they have an equal opportunity to continue in the public education system which they enter at the 9th grade. The involvement of young refugees in informal education activities is the responsibility of Danish municipalities and activities can vary across municipalities.

There are many highly qualified refugees in Germany who end up working in a different field or in a position lower than their qualifications. One key aspect for finding an adequate job or education is the language, and another key aspect is the ability to integrate into German society. This is the reason why the Integration Campus in Ingolstadt was created. We wish to support the refugees in both of these fields and finally help them find an adequate study course or job in Germany.

The Integration Campus of TH Ingolstadt prepares refugees for higher education in Germany. Our target group are refugees who were unable to finish their studies in their home country or other refugees who wish to study and who have a university entrance qualification. During the 2-year programme our aim is to provide language courses as well as integration and study-preparation courses as well as specific courses, which already teach basics of the later regular study programme.

We started our information campaign on the issue of higher education for asylum seekers at the refugee centres in northern Norway in February 2016. The refugee centres are spread widely and so instead of having to bear the travel costs to come to our university, we travelled to the centres and provided half a day of information activities. By April we had covered all the refugee centres in the high North.

UiT, as the third largest university in Norway has a large potential for taking in refugees and asylum seekers as trainees and practice observers. During the spring semester 2016 UiT cooperated with a local training agency to help refugees holding a positive decision on their residence application to get work experience. A call for action has been spread to all the units at the university on taking part in a refugee practice placement scheme. A common template facilitates such a practice scheme for the interested departments.

The University of Bremen was the first university in Germany to open its doors to refugees who had an academic background in 2015.

Habesha Project is a humanitarian civil society iniciative that was established in 2015 as a response to the greatest displacement crisis of our time; that caused by the armed conflict in Syria. Since that time, Habesha Project’s objective has been to make it possible for young Syrians whose studies were interrupted by the conflict to continue their university education in Mexico. To do that, we created a comprehensive model through which we select at-risk young Syrians, obtain a visa for them, validate their academic qualifications, finance their travel to Mexico, and cover their accomodation and living costs during their studies in the country. Also, thanks to our network of partner universities located across Mexico, our students study for their bachelor’s or master’s degrees on full scholarships.

After years of gaining experience and refining our model, Habesha Project saw the need to look beyond the Syrian crisis, and begin tackling the displacement crisis taking place globally by offering higher education opportunities to young refugees from around the world.
