Because it was the concern of the poor citizens in the United States. He had many debates against Douglas. But at the end he was elected president and after 4 years of civil war, Lincoln won and ordered the abolition of slavery and he unified the United States of America.

But he had won against him before the famous known debates Lincoln-Douglas.
He defended the democracy and the popular sovereignty in issues that included slavery and  territorial expansion. In the south there were a lot of industries that used slaves to do their handiwork. They were living  in an appalling living conditions.

Stephen Douglas and Abraham Lincoln ran for the same Senate seat in 1858. The hot issue of the day was the expansion of slavery. Douglas supported the rights of
citizens in each territory to decide if they would enter the Union as a free state or to slave state.
Lincoln was opposed to slavery. The two men toured the state of Illinois, leaving crowds spellbound

Because the best were Lincoln's ideas where he defended freedom. All the people have rights and it doesn't matter the race or the economic position all of us are humans and everyone should be treated equally. 
And  slavery doesn't make sense because the conditions that had the workers were inhuman.
