Beliefs of Students

Every student can learn skills that will contribute to the sustainability of their lives. Genetics, environment, and culture influence the way each student learns. School counselors must be able to identify, acknowledge and embrace these differences to assist a student in becoming successful. The measure of a student’s success is only being compared to a scale in which the student can perform.

ASCA School Counselor Professional Standards & Competencies Assessment

While taking the ASCA School Counselor Professional Standards & Competencies Assessment, I was saddened at the realization of my low scores in planning and assessment. Although my desire to fulfill these guidelines were high; the capacity in which I can is limited. I reflected on this past school year. Despite my efforts to elicit change via data driven research I was met with push back from administration. Recently, I had to get district officials involved due to my principal taking the district approved social emotional curriculum provided away. She denied the use of it and would not provide reasons even when district inquired. When I would advocate for a change in approach; I am dismissed and given disciplinary duties or clerical task. I am unsure if I would be effective in planning and assessment without opportunity to properly practice this skill set. I am hopeful that with future changes in administration and staff I will be able to enhance the area of planning and assessment.

Strengths

I was secure in finding my strengths in mindsets, ethics, and behaviors. The chore mindsets are what motivates me to continue in this career field. I have a strong belief that all students are capable of learning with the appropriate supports and approach. I approach every situation in a professional manner and always considering the students cultural background. My ability to establish and maintain healthy partnerships with stakeholders has been evident in the various community resources readily available. I am excited about continuing to exhibit these strengths and learning additional ways to apply it to the success of the students.

Reference

American School Counselor Association (2019).

The two Implicit Association Test (IAT) that I completed were Cisgender vs Transgender and Black vs White. I chose these tests because of the countless incidents and discussions taken place. My results depicted that a preference for cisgender people over transgender. I also depicted a strong preference for African American/Black people over white/European. I was not surprised by results as the feelings are quite accurate. I am more prone to identify with someone who looks and identifies their birth gender as I do. I am aware of my preferences and use constant mindfulness to ensure that I do not express any micro-aggressions. I also am constantly engaging in cultural awareness to maintain an unbiases outlook on any encounter I may have while in a professional setting. I am hopeful that as I progress in life my preferences become neutral. I am unsure if the test was effective at depicting implicit preference as I am aware of my thoughts and feelings. I try my best not to lie about them but in engage in respectful discussions and encounters regarding my preferences.
