The reformation was a very violent and tumultuous period, I think we can see this in the art the very compositions are quite angst ridden, the violence of the period comes across in the elaborate compositions which feel very frenzied and wind swept.

How did artists react to the Council of Trent's disapproval of the Mannerist Art and the requirement for Art to be clear and unambiguous " religious images must be clear, unambiguous, and lead viewers to faithful contemplation. Art should be for celebrating and instructing in the faith, not for showcasing artistic skill. The sensuosity, ambiguity, and conspicuous artistry of mannerism was not to be tolerated in sacred art." (Khan Academy) Did they move away from painting comissions of religious artworks? Did this influence the move towards Courtly Mannerism?

Early Mannerism is an establishment of distortion and more "elongation" and unnaturalistic human forms. Very saturated and pigmented colours are used to create atmospheric vibes.

Mannerist art is an academic style made for the educated. It is breaking or rejecting all kinds of rules that had governed representation until that point. However to appreciate that I need to be educated in art history "It’s this quality that makes work of this kind appealing to academics and off-puttingly esoteric to the unschooled visitor — the same reaction Mannerism itself might have had in its period. Mannerism is in part designed to flatter the cultural sophistication of the patron, a kind of aesthetic flirtation ... Bronzino’s citations of Michaelangelo and Hellenistic sculpture rely upon an encyclopedic artistic knowledge to be seen as they really are: ravishing collages of nods and winks."

Coutly mannerism developed as a form of rejection to the artistic standards formed by high Renaissance artists. The high Renaissance valued harmony and naturalism, and mannerist artists combated these standards by creating characters with elongated limbs, and were placed in man-made environments.

Mannerism was a deliberate move away from the balanced proportions, harmony and realism of the renaissance. It introduced a more stylized way of representing the human figure and space, proving that art could be expressive and interpretive rather than strictly imitative of nature.

It encouraged manipulation of anatomy, space and colour for emotional or intellectual effect.

There was a shift towards a more expressive representation of figures in Mannerist Art. I see echoes of this in the 20th century in expressionist and abstract expressionist art. There was also more licence for the artist to act as a creator rather than maker.

"At the Council of Trent, the Church also reaffirmed the usefulness of images—but indicated that church officials should be careful to promote the correct use of images and guard against the possibility of idolatry." Khan academy Article on Art and the Reformation. Art officially was not supposed to lead people (who were largely illiterate and therefore images had great power for) into sin. Council noted in its decrees “all lasciviousness be avoided.”

The protestant Reformation was incredibly impactful on the mannerist style, incorporations of violence. This caused a challenge of the spiritual and political power of the Church of Rome - heavily influencing the categorization of style and values in art following Protestant agendas.
