However to appreciate that I need to be educated in art history <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://benstreet.co.uk/article/contemporary-art-mannerism/"><em>"It’s this quality that makes work of this kind appealing to academics and off-puttingly esoteric to the unschooled visitor — the same reaction Mannerism itself might have had in its period. Mannerism is in part designed to flatter the cultural sophistication of the patron, a kind of aesthetic flirtation ... Bronzino’s citations of Michaelangelo and Hellenistic sculpture rely upon an encyclopedic artistic knowledge to be seen as they really are: ravishing collages of nods and winks."</em></a></p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>There was a shift towards a more expressive representation of figures in Mannerist Art. I see echoes of this in the 20th century in expressionist and abstract expressionist art. There was also more licence for the artist to act as a creator rather than maker.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>"At the Council of Trent, the Church also reaffirmed the usefulness of images—but indicated that church officials should be careful to promote the correct use of images and guard against the possibility of idolatry." Khan academy Article on Art and the Reformation. Art officially was not supposed to lead people (who were largely illiterate and therefore images had great power for) into sin. Council noted in its decrees “all lasciviousness be avoided.”</p>]]></description>
