Block 5_Crafting Thesis Statements (IR project / presentation) - FRQ 3 by Meg Arbeiter

Choose a Prompt and draft a thesis statement that answers the prompt, incorporating a THEME in your Independent Reading novel. (Choose a THESIS formula and modify it for your purposes.) Add a post with YOUR name and the number of the FRQ prompt (1 or 2) from the IR project sheet.
Option 1: Either from your own reading or from the list below, choose a work of fiction which seems intended both “to teach and delight.” Then, in a well-written essay, analyze how the complex pursuit of these dual purposes—instructing and pleasing the reader—contributes to an interpretation of the work as a whole.

Option 2: A symbol is an object, action, or event that represents something or that creates a range of associations beyond itself. In literary works a symbol can express an idea, clarify meaning, or enlarge literal meaning.
Either from your own reading or from the list below, choose a work of fiction in which a symbol reveals something complex about the characters or themes within the work. Then, in a well-written essay, analyze what complex idea or meaning the symbol reveals and how it contributes to an interpretation of the work as a whole. Do not merely summarize the plot.

Something dangerous is likely to happen every time Pip enters the mists, like when he was nearly killed and kidnapped. This challenges why society constantly expects and hopes something different will happen when given a constant pattern of events.

In Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, tears are the motivation to move toward our truth, signifying that crying has its benevolent and clarifying effects on humans. By telling multiple instances in which characters cry to express remorse and ingratitude, tears evoke a distressful tone. However as Dickens reveals the consequential passionate emotions (like gratefulness and love) that arise from our tears, we learn that a good cry excavates a positive awareness of ourselves, making us more gentle and compassionate beings.
