A pulmonologist is a physician that specializes in the respiratory system. They work with patients with serious breathing problems like lung cancer, asthma, cystic fibrosis and sleep apnea. To find a diagnoses they will use procedures like spirometry (taking a deep breath in as much as you can then blowing out hard and as fast as you can into a machine, usually they use this for testing asthma),bloodwork, chest x-rays, bronchoscopies and CT scans.
