At the end of every class, students write down 1 thing they learned and 1 question they have. It's an easy way to assess every class period. You can also do it with a PollEverywhere, Clickers, or just on note cards.

When you ask a question, have students write their responses on dry erase boards and hold them up. This way, you get 100% participation, you assess where your students are, and no one student dominates the discussion. If you don't have boards, slide cardstock into plastic page protectors.

Each of my students has an attendance calendar which they pick up at the beginning of class each day, initial the block for that particular date, and turn back in. Not only does it track who was in class, but it also reminds each student of the importance of attendance, the short duration of a semester, and how many days they've missed. I had one student who lamented, "I wanted to skip class today, but for some reason I just had to be there to initial that stupid calendar!"

Post-It Notes

I have found dozens of ways to use little yellow post-it notes to engage students in class and get them out of their seats! Each student is given one post-it. Sometimes they are asked to respond to a multiple choice question by placing their post-it on the chalkboard next to the response they would choose. Sometimes they pile their post-its to build a bar graph. Other times they place their post-it into a Venn Diagram on the chalkboard to illustrate their response. This type of activity is quick, engages 100% of your students, and allows everyone to see where their answers fall, but with relative anonymity. As we discuss answers, students will often get up again and move their post-it to show that they have reconsidered their answer!

Walk-Around Review

The class before a test, tape single sheets of paper, each a different sample question, at eye-level around the classroom. Students work with a partner or a group of three and walk around the room, stopping to discuss how they would respond if this question were to appear on the upcoming test. No writing is allowed at this point, just talking. Then they return to their seats and can write what they wish about each question. Students with test anxiety find themselves better prepared if they have practiced an initial response to the types of questions they will encounter. The environment is active, with all students engaged.

Either in class or through Blackboard, give your students a syllabus quiz the second class meeting time. If i give this in class I allow the students to have their syllabus in front of them when answering questions. Usually a 10 pt quiz that everyone can feel good about:) Plus, I know that all the students have a copy and have read the syllabus
