Some students will be willing and excited to learn literacy and reading skills each day. Others, may need some motivation. There are many ways to motivate students to engage in literacy. Some of my favorite include choice. Giving the student a choice of what they want to read allows them to have a personal connection. Also, as teachers, make sure there are good and interesting books for the students. Students will be more motivated to read if they are interested in the book. Lastly, include less grading on reading. Grading and setting strict pages to read can unmotivated some students. Grading and assessing can come in other forms. Allow for the students to enjoy the reading and go at their own pace.

There are many ways to motivate readers. Reading may come naturally to some students, but to others it make take a little push. One way to motivate readers is to make reading experiences more interesting and relevant to their everyday life. Another way to motivate students is by using movement in the classroom while reading. Students begin to fidget when they are sitting for too long. Have students act out key elements in the chapter in the book that they may be reading to get them up and moving. Read-alouds are also a good way to motivate students. Make sure to read with an enthusiastic voice that conveys excitement to get students engaged.

This shows the students that you view reading as important and valuable to learning. Another way to motivate students to read is create a book club in the classroom. Let the students choose the book they would like to read for book club, the students will be more interested in reading if they like the book. The book club will allow them to share their thoughts about the book with the class. The book club can be split up into different groups where the students rotate the books through each group.

Many students are just not interested in reading. Teachers can motivate these students by providing books that students can relate to or are interested in, model good reading habits and make reading fun and interactive. Most students would rather read an interesting and exciting drama filled story over an informative nonfiction book. Teachers should allow students access to books that interest them. They are more likely to read a book that they enjoy than something they have no interest in reading. Teachers should also supply books that can be related to the student’s cultural background. Many students might want to learn more about their culture or the culture of some of their peers. Teachers can also model good reading habits for the students. If the students are having quiet reading time that can be a time for the teacher to read as well. The teacher can model how to read and actively take note of the main ideas and key details in the story. The last way I will motivate student to read in the classroom is by creating fun and interactive activities related to reading. Instead of having a test or a paper after reading there are ways to asses the students understanding in an interactive way. You can have the students get into reading groups that have to present the main ideas of the story to the rest of the class with a skit, poem, or song. This will help the students see that reading is not always a strict learning experience. Allow the kids to explore their interests and use their creative minds to express what they learned.

Some of the ways that I can motivate my students include making reading material relevant for students, this gives them the initiative with the reading task. I can link text and activities to real life experiences. I could also give my students challenging reading and writing tasks. I can also let students collaborate with each other, they can share their ideas with one another. I can also let them choose what they want to read. Also, I can plan a lot of hands on activities to help the students stay active when they learn.

To motivate readers from the very start of the year, make reading exciting. When doing read alouds, read books on topics that they are interested in. Further their interest by asking questions and showing your interest.
When a student hits a new reading level, reward them with a school dollar (if done at said school), cool toy from the bucket, pass to eat with the teacher, and so on. To connect this to reading, allow the student to read a book of his or her choice (outside of reading levels). Reading books of a students choice makes literacy more interesting to them.
Include students in the readings. Encourage them to share their thoughts on the book or topic. Share your excitement on their thoughts!

One of the ways is by connecting the readings to things they are interested in and letting them choose materials they enjoy. Teachers can show interest in the books students are reading by asking questions and being enthusiastic when talking about it. Another way is to have the teacher read the book, then watching the book. This can help the students visualize better and listen to another person tell the story. Teachers should also plan out times for students to read quietly everyday and give access to books throughout the room. This can help students discover types of books they like or find books that can help them understand situations that are going on at home. Lastly, send home activity dates from the local library. This will help involve the family and the activities will show how much fun reading can be.

Motivating readers...
It's key to grab the young readers attention at the beginning of the school year. We want students to love to read and be engaged with literacy activities. One way to motivate readers is to scaffold student choice in your classroom (ownership). A second, challenge your students (self-efficacy). I consider collaboration (social motivation) one of the most important ways to motivate readers. This one can be done at home with parents, at school with the teacher, partners, as a whole or small group. The last motivation piece I'm going to list is goals (mastery motivation) its always important to have students set goals and work towards accomplishing those set goals.

It can be a challenge, but there are several things I can do as a teacher to get my students motivated. One way I plan to motivate my students in literacy is to figure out their interests. Whether they like animals, sports, cars, etc., and use their interests as a way to motivate them. Another way I will motivate my students in literacy is by not only having them work or read on their own, but also by having them read or work with a partner or group at times. One last way I will motivate my students is by having the entire class choose a book that I read one chapter everyday until the book is completed. Once the book is finished they get placed into groups and create a model or a project that reflects on the book. It could be the books plot, a specific chapter or event, or whatever they choose to create.

Motivating readers in your classroom is not as hard as people think it is. Being able to motivate readers will make your classroom successful and run smoother. I plan on motivating my readers by allowing them to read what they like to read about. If they only read shark books, then that's what they read. I will never tell a student they cannot read something because they have read too much on that topic. I will also motivate my students by having fun reading activities or fun reading days. I love the idea of having a flashlight Friday. I plan on doing this in my classroom by having all of my students grab a flashlight and we turn the lights off for 15 minutes and they get to read. This makes it fun and enjoyable for the kids. I also like they idea of having the kids read to stuffed animals. Obviously this would work for younger students. I will also have goals set for each individual student and as a class whole that if they reach those goals, they get special incentives.

All students need to be motivated because this encourages them to participate in class. As a teacher I want to be motivating during all lessons but especially literacy. I know how hard it can be for students to want to read or want to journal but me being their to motivate them will help. I will motivate my students with something they are interested. I will use the lesson I am teaching that day to first figure out what they are interested in. Most students have negative self talk and in my classroom they will have positive self talk they will not say they can not do something or they are not good at something, they will say I have to work on this and improve to accomplish the goal. I want the kids to be a part of every lesson and that means I will not just sit in front of the class and read to them. I will allow them to read to others (buddy read) we could even do popcorn reading. When I was in kindergarten we got to have a day when all the parents come in and each student reads their favorite book in front of the whole class, this was motivating to the students because they were able to feel noticed which is how every student should feel. Another thing is, is everything I teach I want to relate back to the students because that helps them focus better also.

A way that I would work to motivate students would be to have them work with me individually to set a reading goal. This could be when they read out loud how many words can they read in a minute. Then once they reach that goal they can get like 10 minutes of structured free time, meaning they would do reading games online or something like that.

I think this would motivate because they are reading things that interest them. Another way I could motivate them is by picking fun reading games.

To motivate my students in literature, I would start by allowing the students to pick books of heir interest. This way, they at least want to learn and read about the book they chose. I would meet with each student and help them set an individual goal to follow throughout the week or months that it takes them to reach. I will do my best to remember each students goal and encourage them and give them the positive feedback that they need in order to find the motivation to reach that goal. I will also do a lot of activities in the room with groups or partners to help the students get comfortable with each other and share ideas.

To motivate my readers, I will allow them to read the books that interest them. My classroom will have a variety of genres to chose from. I think setting a class goal to read a certain amount of books by the end of the year would be motivating because if they reach the goal, they'd earn a class party. Individually, after they finish a book they will write a summary and be able to add a sticker next to their name on a chart to keep track of their personal progress.

In order to motivate my readers, I wold encourage conversations about the books that they are reading. Instead of assigning book reports, my students would have book talks, during which they would give a review of the book they read and make personal connections to their own lives. I would also work with my students to set individual goals for their reading. Then, every time a student achieved one of their goals they would receive a prize.
