Change in Mindset

For me, the biggest change in mindset that resulted from this module is that there is space for inquiry-based learning in kinderland. The grade level reading from the framework paired with my experiences in the classroom really helped to open my eyes. I knew going into this module that inquiry-based instruction is best, but I wasn't sure until going through this module what that meant exactly for early primary students. I was able to practice some different strategies that have helped improve my practice, but ultimately, I learned that young kids are driven by questions and are often eager to answer questions when posed to them. They are naturally curious, which makes inquiry and investigative learning perfect for them!

I also loved seeing the perspectives of my students shift the second (kind of third) time we drew scientists. I had two students who decided to draw themselves doing one of the activities we had done in class. This was a huge change from the wild-haired, bespectacled man in a lab coat they had constructed at first.

Change in Tools/Skills

Learning how to read the NGSS was something that has RADICALLY changed my understanding of science instruction. Before that lesson, I would read a standard and think "Okay, so I will teach something about living things."

Learning the design behind the standards really caused them to have more meaning to me. They are an amazing tool to help teachers equip students with the skills they need to be contributors in a 21st century world. This activity helped me to teach science with a clear and defined purpose.

I still am wanting to see another Kindergarten or 1st grade teacher implement science instruction. Reading the framework for both grades helped me understand much more clearly what quality science instruction at that age is supposed to reflect. However, I do think there would be benefits to seeing the lessons implemented in the classroom as opposed to just reading the lessons from the framework.

This unit has me very excited to teach science at any age level!
