In this activity students will sit in a circle and say one to two thing that are unique or different about them. The first person will say what they find special and interesting about themselves and holding the end of a ball of yarn, will throw the ball to another person in the circle. That person will then throw the ball, making sure to hold on to part of the string, after they have said something. Eventually after every person has gone the circle will look like a web. This symbolizes that every student is unique in their own ways and that being unique is a great thing because each person has something special about them that helps connect everyone together and builds a classroom web!
Grade: 1-5
Assets: personal

This activity is a great way to get students to meet each other as well as for the teacher to find out about their students. In this activity students are given a scavenger hunt sheet and will try to fill up every box with a different person's name that is in the classroom. Students will go around communicating with each other and learning new things about their classmates. For example, some boxes may say statements like "I visited a different country," or "I celebrated my birthday over summer," or "I have a younger sister." The sheet can ask all different types of questions and any grade level can participate in this activity.
Grade: 1-12
Assets: personal, cultural, community

This activity is perfect for bringing the class together as a whole and helping the teacher find out about his/her students and how they relate to each other. In this activity students will be split up into small groups and will compete to see who can build the highest tower out of cards. The thing is though, in order to add a card to the tower the students need to figure out one thing that they all have in common to write on the back of each card. This activity helps to build teamwork and helps students as well as the teacher see who has what in common.
Grade: 1-5
Assets: personal, cultural, community

This activity has been around forever and is perfect for helping students and teachers get to know their students better. The activity starts off where one student will say their name and something they like that starts with the first initial of their name. For example, I would say, "My name is Kylie and I like kangaroos." Then the person next to me will go and say his/her name and something they like that starts with their first name initial. The catch is though that the next person needs to repeat and remember all the names and facts about each student before them. The game continues up until one student cannot remember what a previous student has said.
Grade: 3-12
Assets: community

This strategy of having students bring in something personal to them that helps show their interests and passions helps teachers find out about their students on a deeper level instead of just knowing their name and a fun fact about them. If students are able to bring in something creative and special to them it helps the teacher learn about a students' certain talent, interest or background.
Grade: k-12
Assets: personal, cultural, community

Exit Slips

Exit slips are a great way to differentiate each individual student's learning differences. At the end of the lesson after the teacher has reviewed the lesson, the students will be given a slip of paper that has a couple questions on it that is based off the big idea of the lesson. As the students leave the teacher will collect the slips at the door and will go through each student's answers and sort them into three piles. One pile for the students who get it, one pile for the students who kind of get it and one pile for the students who don't get it. This strategy is very helpful to see what the kids have learned and what needs to be re-taught or reviewed.

This strategy is very valuable because the students are the ones assessing themselves. This is their chance to tell the teacher what they understand and what needs to be explained better to them. When students are able to communicate to the teacher, it is very helpful to the teacher so they know what they need to improve on and helps them to brainstorm other ways to teach a specific topic. In this strategy students assess what they get/don't get and writes one or two sentences explaining why they get it or why they don't get it.

This strategy involves the teacher to observe the students actions and words that they use in group settings to see if they are successfully applying the new knowledge in group collaboration. Look to see if each student is participating in the group discussion and not just one student is talking. If the students are quiet during this time of discussion, they are most likely lost.

Teachers also get the chance to observe students' progress and provide feedback to them immediately through this app. In addition, this app allows students to request help from their peers anonymously. This strategy is great for cooperative learning and communication.
