Slavery in Ancient Greece was different than slavery in America. Slavery in Ancient Greece was not based on race, and anyone could be forced into the life of a slave. If someone walked the streets alone, they could be kidnapped and be made into a slave, no matter who they were or what they looked like. Slavery in Ancient Greece was unique because of the different rankings a slave could be categorized in. Some could enjoy a family life where they were well respected and valued. Others were treated with the respect of a prisoner or as an animal. It wasn't too hard to get out of the cycle, though. Most slaves were presented with multiple opportunities to free themselves in a lifetime, so it wasn't common for a child to be born into slavery. Slave owners would sometimes allow their slaves to perform trade. This is how slaves would earn the money that would eventually earn them their freedom. Even though slaves were often freed, slavery didn't completely end until thousands of years after the Greek empire collapsed. Slavery was a very normal and common part of life in Greece, so its abolishment took many years.

Movie clip number 1: Clip from the television series; "Rome Has Touched the Wall":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKTGEz9tr3A

How did the people of Ancient Greece become slaves?

A Greek person would often become a slave at a younger age, when they are at their most vulnerable. Children or teens only knew their families, and were less likely to be recognized by the citizens if they were kidnapped. It did not matter what race you were, if one was alone in the streets, or was an unchaperoned child, it was a possibility that slave traders would attack and kidnap you. Women and children were the most common targets, but if a man was alone, he was just as likely to be captured. Most slaves that began slavery at birth or at a young age were sold to slave traders by their own parents. Although this sounds like a horrific and selfish action for the parents to commit, they often had no other choice. Although some sold their children for money every so often, selling children was more commonly for the child's well being. Many families in Ancient Greece were way too poor to care for themselves, and couldn't possibly raise a child off of their living. A slave might be treated badly, but they would be fed and would be provided with a roof over their heads. Parents saw this as the best option for the survival of the child, and hoped that their child would be a higher ranking slave that could eventually buy their freedom. Another common way that one could become a slave was through rivalries. Those venturing from other enemy cities would often be captured and forced to live the life of a slave. Nearly all prisoners of war were sent back to Greek cities to participate in slavery, often as the lowest ranking slaves too.

Movie clip number 2: Clip from the movie, "Courtesy Visit" 1972:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ObOJG3Palg

Was it possible to become free in a slave's lifetime?

Slavery was incredibly common in the time of the Ancient Greek. It was also shockingly easy to become a slave yourself, and slave kidnappers and traders were everywhere. It wasn't the most common thing to be owned by a slave master that would just allow you to go free, but it could happen. Most slaves had a few chances to become free, unless their master was insistent on keeping that particular slave for the rest of their life. To find and buy a new slave for a fairly good price was a very convenient and simply process though, so owners usually went through many slaves, and didn't worry to much about one of their slaves eventually trying to free themselves. The most common way for a slave to free themselves was though payment. If a slave traded skillfully, they could collect enough money to pay the set price to their master and become free. There were also instances where if a slave agreed to fight in the army, they could earn their freedom. The slaves who had less of a chance to earn freedom were prisoners of war, because they were seen as more savage and criminal than other slaves. The Greek saw slavery as their lifelong punishment for being from an enemy city. If a slave master was sick and dying, they were given the choice to free their slaves, or to give ownership of the slaves to their eldest son. Most of the time, slave masters made the choice to free their slaves, and this is why not many children are born into slavery. Slaves were usually freed before their children were forced into slavery as well. Although it could take a few decades, slaves often found ways to become free people again in their lifetime.

Song: John Lennon- Free As A Bird [Single]:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHSFTRUekT0

How and when was slavery in Ancient Greece abolished?

The time of Ancient Greece ended when the Romans became the dominant power in Greece. Slavery was carried on into the Roman empire, and also continued in the Byzantine Empire, and lastly, the Ottoman Empire. So slavery did not end in the time of Ancient Greece, and it took thousands of years for slavery to be abolished. It wasn't until 1822 that Greece finally abolished slavery. This year is in the time period after "Late Modern" abolishment of slavery, making Greece one of the last countries to end official slavery, and the public slave trade market. Greek slavery ended with independence. The large number of riots and slaves themselves fighting back was a critical factor to the end of slavery. The reason slavery in Greece took so long to end was how deep connections with having slaves went. Slave owners included slaves in every aspect of their lives, from having the slave make dinner to taking the slave on a voyage or trip. Slaves were not treated so well, and were under strict, crippling laws, but slave owners recognized the importance a slave had in their life. The slave population themselves had even believed that slavery was just a part of life in Greece, and that they were important in society. The liberation of slaves in countries around Greece made the Greek slaves realize the possibility for freedom, and for freedom of all generations to come. Even thought the process was lengthy, Greece was able to abolish slavery, and slave owners reliance on having many slaves to serve them at any time.

Song: Being a Slave [single]:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKa5l9GM8qA
