This picture represents the action of unwinding as murder because the kids are simply seen as pieces that will be taken away and given to those in need. These kids from the ages thirteen to eighteen will never be a part of one body and one soul again, so they are then dispersed to many other people. Because of this separation, unwinding is murder.

Once a child is labelled as an "unwind," he or she has no choice whether they wish to be unwound or not. The child will be sent to the harvest camp to be taken apart against will, and he or she has no other option than to run away or go willingly. Because the children's right to decide what happens to them is taken away, they are indirectly murdered as an individual.

This picture shows how the action of unwinding is murder because of the harm the individual goes through. When kids are labelled as "unwinds," they lose who they used to be. People constantly see them as unimportant, and they are forced into fighting for survival if they choose to run away. Because of this fight for survival and being labeled, the kids lose their identity.

This video shows a child going through the unwinding process as she listen to a nurse calm her. This unwinding parallels the unwinding of Roland in the novel. The video clearly depicts unwinding as murder because the young girl begs to be let go and be freed; however, the unwinding still takes place. Because the girl no longer has a say in what happens to her, she is murdered.

This song gives insight to the struggles the unwinds face after being declared an unwind. It shows how innocent the children are because they are so young, yet their freedom to determine their fate is still taken away. As the children run away and try to survive, they slowly give up on the chance to live and push on, and the children suffer from a murdered identity.

Because of this label, they have no other choice than to push away from society as they are socially murdered by society

Connor contemplates how his life will be after he is unwound, and he pictures his body dispersed between others: "He imagines his spirit like a web strung between the thousand recipients of his hand, his eyes, the fragments of his brain--none of it under his control anymore, all absorbed by the bodies and wills of others." Connor's fear of being unwound brings about the theme that unwinding is murder because Connor no longer has control or free will over his future (Shusterman 171).

Roland's unwinding is a defining part of the novel. His unwinding is the first time that the reader finds out what the unwinding process is like for the children instead of just hearing about it. His unwinding is one of the clearest example of murder in the whole novel because the unwinding starts off with Roland being unable to leave, forcing him to be unwound against his will. Secondly, the doctors shift in teams as they take apart his body piece by piece. Although Roland clearly wants the doctors to stop, he is slowly losing his identity as he loses each part of his body. The nurse acts as if she understand Roland's pain by "comforting" him through the unwinding process until her no longer can move, think, or process actions, leaving him the victim of a murder.

Tithing is a process in the book that has kids born to be unwound. This means that these children are brainwashed from the minute they are born to believe that being unwound is good and beneficial. Lev is a tithe and believe this same idea. Even though Lev believes he is meant to be unwound, it is still considered murder because it takes away the identity of the tithes because all that they identify with is eventually being unwound. Along with no identity, tithes can do nothing to change their fate because they are born to be unwound.
