These initiatives aim to support students who are struggling with stress, anxiety, and depression. According to a recent survey, more than 40% of teenagers reported feeling overwhelmed by schoolwork and social pressure. In response, many schools are hiring professional counselors and offering mental health education during regular class hours. Some schools have even created “wellness rooms,” where students can relax and calm down during the day. Teachers are also receiving training to recognize early signs of mental health issues in their students. Parents have welcomed these changes, saying they feel more confident about their children’s well-being at school. Experts believe that these efforts will help create a healthier and more supportive learning environment.

In recent years, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of single-use plastics such as masks, gloves, and food containers has sharply increased. Unfortunately, most of this waste is not properly recycled and ends up in landfills, rivers, and oceans. Environmental groups warn that plastic pollution is harming wildlife and entering the human food chain through microplastics. Some governments are now taking action by banning plastic bags and encouraging the use of eco-friendly alternatives. However, experts argue that stronger international cooperation and stricter regulations are still needed. Citizens are also being urged to reduce their plastic consumption by choosing reusable items and supporting sustainable products. If no action is taken, the level of plastic pollution could double by 2040, causing irreversible damage to the environment.

Title: Youth Unemployment Rates Continue to Rise Amid Economic Uncertainty

Who? Young job seekers and recent graduates
What? Are struggling to find stable employment
When? Over the past year, especially after recent economic slowdowns
Where? In many developed and developing countries
Why? Due to slow job market recovery and rising competition
How? Through delayed hiring, reduced job openings, and lack of experience

Article:
Youth unemployment has become a growing concern in both developed and developing countries. Recent reports show that the number of young people unable to find stable work has increased significantly over the past year. Economists explain that many companies are delaying new hires due to rising costs and economic uncertainty. At the same time, young applicants often lack the work experience needed to compete with older, more experienced candidates. As a result, many graduates are forced to accept part-time or temporary jobs that do not match their skills. Governments are trying to address this issue by expanding job training programs and supporting internships. However, experts say long-term solutions are needed, including educational reform and greater investment in youth-focused industries. Without meaningful action, the high youth unemployment rate could lead to serious economic and social consequences in the future.

Climate Crisis: No Longer a Story of the Future

The climate crisis is no longer a distant threat—it is a present-day emergency. Recent data shows that global temperatures are rising faster than expected, leading to more frequent and intense natural disasters such as wildfires, floods, and heatwaves. Scientists warn that if carbon emissions continue at the current rate, many parts of the world may become uninhabitable within decades. In both developed and developing countries, communities are already experiencing the devastating effects of climate change. Crops are failing due to unpredictable weather patterns, and rising sea levels are forcing coastal populations to relocate. Despite growing awareness, global action remains insufficient. Governments and industries are being urged to take stronger steps, including transitioning to renewable energy sources, investing in sustainable infrastructure, and enforcing stricter environmental regulations. Experts emphasize that without immediate and meaningful action, the damage may become irreversible, threatening ecosystems, economies, and human lives around the world.

Recently, the Korea Food Research Institute, in collaboration with domestic microwave manufacturers, has developed a vacuum–microwave combined treatment method that is drawing attention. What makes this process special is that it heats food rapidly by applying microwaves under vacuum conditions, which significantly minimizes nutrient loss.

Why is this technology needed? Compared to traditional thermal dehydration methods, this new process shortens cooking time, resulting in a substantial reduction in the loss of vitamin C and antioxidants. It also helps preserve the food’s original color and aroma, which are often altered by high-temperature and high-pressure treatments.

Who is commercializing this technology? Major HMR (Home Meal Replacement) companies and manufacturers of powdered soups and health supplements are currently reviewing its adoption.

When did the commercial application begin? Pilot lines began producing sample products in the second half of last year, with full-scale distribution expected within this year.

Where is it mainly being used? It is being applied to a wide range of products such as instant soups and porridge, vegetable snacks, and protein bars. The technology is especially effective in foods with high moisture content.

How is the process optimized? Microwave power and exposure time are precisely controlled for each product, and the vacuum level is adjusted between 50–100 torr. This allows for both nutrient preservation and microbial sterilization.

As a result, the nutrient retention rate has increased by 20–30% compared to conventional heat treatment methods. Moreover, the process meets microbial safety standards, making long-term storage possible.

Experts evaluate this vacuum–microwave combination method as a next-generation food processing technology that simultaneously enhances food quality and ensures safety. They predict that as process automation and energy efficiency improve, the technology will become increasingly widespread.

Common choices include soda, chips, and convenience store foods, which are high in sugar, fat, and sodium. These snacks often lack essential nutrients like calcium and iron, leading to poor nutrition. In the short term, unhealthy snacking can cause tiredness and lower concentration. In the long term, it may increase the risk of obesity and diseases like diabetes. A school survey showed that many students skip meals and eat snacks instead. A nutritionist warned that such habits could affect adult health, too. Experts suggest healthy snacks like fruits, nuts, and yogurt. Drinking water before snacking and choosing high-fiber foods can also help. Developing good eating habits in youth is key to lifelong health.Teenagers need proper nutrition during their growth period, but many consume too many unhealthy snacks.
Role of Green Chemistry in Achieving Carbon Neutrality

As the climate crisis deepens, countries around the world are searching for effective ways to achieve carbon neutrality. Among the most promising solutions is green chemistry, an approach to chemical science that aims to design products and processes that minimize environmental harm.

Traditional chemical manufacturing has long relied on energy-intensive processes and non-renewable resources, often producing large amounts of greenhouse gases and toxic waste. In contrast, green chemistry focuses on using renewable feedstocks, improving energy efficiency, and reducing waste from the very beginning of production.

Scientists and industries across the globe are already adopting green chemistry in laboratories and factories. In the U.S. and Europe, governments are investing in research and supporting regulations that encourage sustainable chemical practices. In South Korea and other countries, some chemical companies have also begun shifting toward greener production methods.

This transformation is about more than just environmental responsibility. Green chemistry can also improve product safety, reduce production costs in the long run, and increase the global competitiveness of companies that adopt it.

As the urgency of climate action continues to rise, science and technology are being called upon to provide real, scalable solutions. Green chemistry, it seems, may be one of the most powerful tools we have to build a carbon-neutral future.

Around the world, architects, urban planners, and local governments are embracing adaptive reuse to revitalize aging modern architecture—carefully preserving the original structures without damaging their unique characteristics. Since the early 2020s, this approach has become a key strategy in cities across Europe, Asia, and the Americas for combining sustainability with heritage preservation.

Many buildings from the 1950s to the 1980s showcase distinctive architectural styles that reflect the era’s cultural and design values. Instead of demolishing these valuable structures, cities are transforming them for new uses like housing, museums, offices, and community centers—all while maintaining their original form and character.

The process begins with thorough assessments to understand the building’s historical and structural significance. Renovation work focuses on reinforcing and updating the building without altering its core architectural identity. For example, modern HVAC systems, improved insulation, and digital technologies are integrated discreetly to meet today’s standards without compromising the original design.

Famous examples include Paris’s La Samaritaine, which reopened after a restoration that preserved its historic façade, New York’s TWA Flight Center, transformed into a hotel while keeping its iconic shapes intact, and Seoul’s Dongdaemun Design Plaza, which blends modern interventions with preserved industrial elements.

Experts say this sensitive approach ensures that the architectural heritage is respected and kept alive, while adapting buildings to serve modern needs. Adaptive reuse also reduces environmental impact by minimizing demolition waste and carbon emissions.

As urban areas face land scarcity, climate challenges, and housing shortages, adaptive reuse offers a balanced, responsible way to honor the past while building sustainable futures—revitalizing buildings without erasing their history.

AI-Powered Non-Opioid Painkillers: Safer Future for Pain Management

Opioid painkillers, while effective for severe pain, carry a high risk of addiction and serious side effects, contributing to a significant public health crisis. The alarming rise in opioid overdose deaths, particularly involving potent substances like fentanyl, highlights the urgent need for safer alternatives. In response, the development of non-opioid analgesics has become increasingly crucial. Recently, the U.S. FDA approved Journavex, a novel non-opioid painkiller developed by Vertex Pharmaceuticals. This drug works by blocking pain signals at a specific sodium channel, NaV1.8, before they reach the brain, thus avoiding the addictive properties of opioids. A notable aspect of Journavex's development is the significant role played by Artificial Intelligence. AI accelerated the process by identifying the target protein and screening numerous molecules to find the most effective compound. Clinical trials demonstrated that Journavex provided pain relief comparable to or even better than opioids for post-surgical pain, with fewer serious side effects. Although it is currently more expensive than traditional opioids and its effects on chronic pain are still being studied, this AI-powered non-opioid represents a promising step towards safer pain management.

Governments and energy companies around the world are actively adopting Carbon Capture and Storage technology in response to the growing climate crisis.

This technology aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by capturing carbon dioxide emitted from industrial facilities and power plants before it enters the atmosphere, and storing it underground.

Countries including those in Europe, the United States, and South Korea have already launched pilot Carbon Capture and Storage projects or are entering the commercialization stage.

Climate scientists emphasize that Carbon Capture and Storage is one of the essential technologies needed to achieve carbon neutrality.

In particular, Carbon Capture and Storage plays a crucial role in industrial sectors where a full transition to renewable energy has yet to be achieved.

The process involves separating carbon dioxide from emissions, compressing it, transporting it through pipelines, and injecting it deep underground—more than 1 kilometer—into stable rock formations for long-term storage.

However, the technology faces challenges due to its high initial costs and concerns over the long-term safety of stored carbon dioxide.

Despite these issues, the severity of the climate crisis is accelerating the global adoption of Carbon Capture and Storage as a core strategy for carbon reduction.

New Phase of Schizophrenia: Biological Disorder, Not Mental Illness

On March 28, 2025, a research team at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) presented new biological evidence suggesting that schizophrenia can arise during fetal and early childhood brain development, rather than appearing solely as a psychological disorder in later life.

Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder characterized by positive symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions, negative symptoms including reduced emotional expression, lack of motivation, and diminished speech, as well as cognitive impairments, that lead to significant functional decline. Despite extensive research, a single underlying mechanism of schizophrenia hasn’t been clearly identified yet. However, the POSTECH research team has uncovered a potential genetic cause related to neurodevelopmental abnormalities, offering new insight into the origins of the disorder.

The study was led by Professors Sangki Park (Department of Life Sciences and Interdisciplinary Graduate Program), Taekyung Kim, and Minseong Kim. The team focused on a specific genetic variant, AS3MTd2d3, in the AS3MT gene, which they found to significantly disrupt neural development.

Their research demonstrated that the presence of this variant causes an imbalance in stem cell differentiation, leading to a marked reduction in excitatory neurons in the brain. This neural imbalance appears to contribute directly to symptoms commonly associated with schizophrenia.

In experiments using mice with the AS3MTd2d3 mutation, the animals exhibited key characteristics resembling human schizophrenia: enlarged brain ventricles, decreased responses to external stimuli, and reduced social interaction. These findings suggest a clear biological mechanism underlying the disorder.

“This study supports the idea that schizophrenia is rooted in neurodevelopmental abnormalities,” said Professor Park. “By identifying a genetic mutation linked to these early changes, we move closer to early diagnosis and the development of targeted therapies.”

The POSTECH team plans to continue their research, aiming to apply their findings to early diagnostic tools and treatments that could potentially prevent or mitigate the onset of schizophrenia.

CLIMATE CHANGE INCREASES RISK OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES

Climate change is no longer just an environmental issue — it is also a serious public health threat. As global temperatures rise, the habitats of disease-carrying organisms such as mosquitoes and ticks expand. This increases the spread of infectious diseases like malaria, dengue fever, and Lyme disease into new regions. According to the World Health Organization, climate change is already contributing to higher infection rates in tropical and temperate zones. In recent years, parts of Europe and North America have reported outbreaks of diseases that were once limited to warmer climates. Who is most at risk? Vulnerable communities with limited access to healthcare, especially in low-income countries, face the greatest danger. When did the shift become noticeable? Scientists began warning of the link between warming and disease patterns as early as the 1990s, but the effects have accelerated in the last decade. Where are the impacts being felt? From the Amazon rainforest to suburban neighborhoods in the United States, the geographic reach of infectious diseases is growing. Why is this happening now? Warmer temperatures, increased rainfall, and changing ecosystems all create ideal conditions for pathogens to thrive. How can we respond? Experts urge governments to invest in stronger public health systems and climate adaptation strategies. Without urgent action, the health consequences of climate change may become as devastating as its environmental effects.

Telomeres are protective caps located at the ends of chromosomes and play a crucial role in cell division and aging. Each time a cell divides, the telomeres become shorter, acting as a biological clock that determines the cell’s lifespan. When telomeres become too short, cells can no longer divide, leading to aging. Recently, researchers have been using telomeres to monitor health. Measuring telomere length can help estimate biological age and predict the risk of diseases such as cardiovascular disorders and cancer. Studies have also shown that regular exercise and a healthy diet can have a positive effect on telomere length. Telomeres also play an important role in cancer research. Many cancer cells maintain their telomeres to continue dividing indefinitely. To prevent this, new cancer treatments are being developed that specifically target telomeres. In addition, telomeres have potential applications in regenerative medicine. It has been suggested that lengthening telomeres could help regenerate damaged tissues, although ethical concerns remain. In conclusion, telomere research has a significant impact on aging and disease prevention and is expected to continue playing an important role in the medical field.
