English was spoken at home even though it was neither of my parents' first language. They made this decision in an attempt to shield me from the racism they encountered living in Southern California.

I went to school (elementary, middle and high school) with a predominantly Latino and Filipino population. Unfortunately, the groups were highly segregated and there were many differences in our jargon. You often heard English, Spanish or Tagalog on campus.

Every day after school (until my senior year in high school), my sister would drive me an hour away to ballet lessons in a white, affluent suburb. Here I learned there were a different set of rules than my high school. I observed the girls in my ballet classes who I grew close to over the years and learned that different language rules existed in this space. Not to mention that all ballet terms are in French and we had an emergent-English speaking instructor from Romania.

At some point, my mother realized she had made a mistake by not speaking Spanish at home. She placed me in a Spanish catechism class. I failed miserably. In the “sink or swim” model — I sank. It was an eye-opening experience in many ways. She also bought the “501 Spanish Verbs” book and I often had to sit and write out conjugations. [This reminds me of the "old school" approach of teaching traditional grammar as opposed to functional. Not blaming anyone, but I think my mom needed to develop her KAL.] Let’s just say that didn’t really work either!

I attended the UCLA Teacher Education Program with a concentration in English as a Second Language. My most memorable courses were with Dr. Kris Guitierrez, professor of Language, Literacy and Culture. She introduced me to the work of Vygotsky and focused on additive bilingualism. She discussed issues of racism and how they affected policy in education, especially in regards to access for our MLLs (e.g. Prop 187 which denied healthcare and public education to undocumented immigrants). The UCLA Teacher Ed Program funneled us new, bright-eyed teachers to an area called Pico Union in Los Angeles. I worked at Hoover Street Elementary which primarily served students from Mexico and Central America.

Fast forward many years and I found myself working in a dual-immersion school (German and English) in Marina Del Rey, CA. I split a grade 4 class 50/50 with my German-speaking counterpart.

I currently work at a school in China where I work with many, many wonderful multilingual students. I am working to help my multilingual students become more proficient in English as an Academic Language as well as champion their full repertoire of language. Hence, here I am in this amazing course!

I'm interested in exploring how the TC Reader's and Writer's Workshop incorporates SFL (through its genre studies and deconstruction of texts) and the Teaching and Learning Cycle (through its mini-lesson format). I believe the workshop model aims to do this...."A language is a resource for making meaning, and meaning resides in systemic patterns of choice." (de Oliviera & Smith Systemic Functional Linguistics).
Also, how can I adjust the workshop framework to support my multilingual students even better?
