Natural Law is the idea that the general laws of man are revealed through nature. For example, from a very young age, we all know that stealing is bad. John Locke was one of the originators of this idea. John Locke got this idea through his faith in God, and saw that certain things were revealed to him through nature, not man.

The Declaration of Independence was drafted to evade the tyranny of the crown over the colonies. People felt that their natural rights were being violated, and no longer wanted to be under England. The founders like Thomas Jefferson wanted to create a new system that will be fair to all of the citizens. The Declaration of Independence was based off of the ideas presented in the Federalist papers.

The idea of separation of powers comes from Charles-Louis de Secondat, baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu, a french philosopher. Separation of powers limits the individual power of each branch. The founding founders took this to heart, and created three separate branches, each with their own checks and balances.

The Legislative Branch is the law making branch of the United States government. The legislative branch was mad e to be bicameral, or to have two houses. One house, the Senate, provides equal representation for all states, as there are only two representatives per state. The other house, the House of Representative, gives the states power proportionally based on their individual populations.

The Judicial Branch is the lawmaking branch of the government. The role of the judicial branch is to interpret the law, and see if the law is constitutional. The creation of the judicial branch also made the Supreme Court, the highest court system in the United States. At first, the Constitution was vague about what powers the court had, so the courts implemented their own things, such as judicial review. The Judicial Branch was not designed to make the law, but today, Supreme court decisions become the law of the United States.

The Executive Branch is the most powerful branch of the United States government. The Executive Branch is headed by the President, and also includes the Vice President, the cabinet, and other executive departments. The main purpose of the executive branch is to enforce the laws made by the legislature. The President, while being the strongest person in government, also has checks placed on him. For example the President has the power to veto any bill, but his veto can be overturned with a two thirds majority in the Senate and the House of Representatives. The founders intended the President to be powerful, but not as powerful as he is today. The President can send troops anywhere in the world for as long as he likes with no congressional approval even though the constitution requires it. Today's president is a lot stronger than the founders intended, but it is still very effective

Democracy is a form of government where the people have all of the power. In a typical democracy, the people have the power to directly elect leaders, such as the the President. The United States has implemented a representative democracy. The founders suggested this to limit the possibility of factions rising up, and tearing the nation apart. In a representative democracy, the people still hold a lot of power. The people can run for office , elect representatives to go to Congress. All individual s can make a difference in a democracy.
