The record Only The Lonely repeatedly asks "What did I do?" It's about the out-of-body confusion of having been dumped: a man's looping, self-re incriminating, self-absolving thoughts. He can only think of himself in one frame: loser.
Page 229

I stopped breathing and felt as if a splinter were being withdrawn my skin. Here was a little detail, a trebly chime, so full of meaning and wordlessly consistent with the information of the song - the shiver of loneliness, the glint of the airplane leaving with the girlfriend in it - that it blocked out nearly everything else: it's all I remember.
Page 227

The Moment Of Human Reaction

It is an interesting element. Often times I would say silence fills the time gap of what we call "the perfect moment". For example when a violinist hits an extremely high note and then stops playing. The note resonates for, what seems like forever, it bounces of walls into audience's ears creating a moment of human reaction. Many times the reaction is applause or joy, however the reaction is self-reflection. I would say the moment is most of the times: indescribable. An example of this is in Pentatonix's Mary Did You Know where beat boxer Kevin steps up to the plate and sings a main melody for the first time in their recording history. It really does the song justice as it brings an awe to the piece that hadn't been there before.
