Forms of Collective Behavior - Panic

A few months ago, on September, a 60,000 people crowd panic after a loud noise that appeared to be like a gunshot. People were really scared because they thought it was a mass shooting, and some were even injured, but thankfully it only lasted for a few minutes and nothing serious occurred. The textbooks talks about how people mistakenly react when they feel like they are in danger by creating stampedes and injuring people on their way without thinking, just like this video shows. In these cases, according to the textbook, people should mainly stay calm and work together with others to avoid people getting hurt and get out of the danger faster and safe (Thio, pg. 406-407).

Source: https://twitter.com/brianstelter/status/1046193714840797184

This photo shows a woman from Saudi Arabia being punished because she was raped. This is an example of divergence theory just like chapter 15 talks about how some countries strictly reject Western cultures for example, dancing, gambling, having books, and movies are strictly forbidden in Saudi Arabia. Also, their laws are extremely enforced and the punishments are extremely serious since they have a non-western culture (Thio, pg. 415).

http://www.himalayanbuzz.com/saudi-arabia-country-women-get-punished-raped/

I found this cute drawing that explains the three stages of social evolution that the textbook mentions. According to the textbook, on stage 3, western societies were considered civilized and in the other two stages, people were considered to be savages and barbarians just like the drawing explains (Thio, pg. 417).

https://www.flickr.com/photos/amatthews/371320449

According to this section of the textbook, Karl Marx truly believed that the rage and resentment that the working people felt towards the capitalists were going to bring them together to make a revolution against them to change it into a communist society. Instead, the working class has grown much more and the government used Marx's predictions to "ease the suffering of workers" (Thio, pg. 419-420). This quote relates to what this section talks about how the working class people were feeling that they must work and suffer exploitation in order for them to survive in society.

"And this life activity [the worker] sells to another person in order to secure the necessary means of life. ... He works that he may keep alive. He does not count the labor itself as a part of his life; it is rather a sacrifice of his life. It is a commodity that he has auctioned off to another."

Marx, Wage Labour and Capital (1847)

https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1847/wage-labour/ch02.htm

This video relates to chapter 15 because it explains what is symbolic interaction and self perspective in society. As society changes through time, people are becoming more modern and this makes a person be who they are. The textbook explains that "through the symbolic interactionist perspective, we gain insight into how social change shapes our definition of the world, ourselves, and out interactions with others." (Thio, pg. 420-421).

https://www.khanacademy.org/test-prep/mcat/society-and-culture/social-structures/v/symbolic-interactionism

I chose this meme because it relates to how the section of the textbook talks about how common it is in today's society that both parents need to work to provide to their family. Each time, as the textbook states, it is more difficult to maintain a house with all the responsibilities and bills because it is becoming more expensive. Also, women are becoming more independent and choose to work to have their own income and as the textbook says, "women workers are now better paid than before..." (Thio, pg. 421). I even felt identified with this meme.

https://goo.gl/images/VdKmVU

I chose this chart because it shows us an estimate on the advancement of technology in 10 years from now just like the textbook explains. According to the textbook, the US has entered an age where society is now dominated by technology, computers, and other high-technology machines. It will continue to rise in the future because now companies are using computers to increase their goods and services (Thio, pg. 423-424).

http://theemergingfuture.com/speed-technological-advancement-ten-years.htm
