Nationalism was detrimental was to imperialism because it brings a country together through the country's name. Imperialism wants to take over a country or take control, but when citizens band together to protects their country's name (in war) from outsiders that try to take over the country will become more resistant to overthrow.

Nationalism was detrimental because when people feel strongly about the success of their country, they are more likely to win in battle. Since they are more passionate, the citizens are more likely to rebel against the imperialist country.

Although some countries gained land, such as in Germany, nationalism overall tried to replace imperialist ideologies and focused more on what was happening in their country. Also, this new found national identity makes citizens ban together against being taken over by a country they do not identify with.

People became blinded by their intense pride for their country and tried to do anything to incite more nationalism. For example, King Leopold treated the native Congolese terribly and ultimately became rich at their expense. However, because of the beautiful architecture and pride he provided for the Belgians, many people chose to look past his awful deeds.

First, nationalism was the ROOT CAUSE of all imperialism - the only reasons why nations wished to expand beyond their borders was because they wanted to benefit their country.

Nationalism could be looked at as detrimental to imperialism if we were to say look at Indian nationalism through the eyes of the expanding British Empire because it could be considered as an unneeded interference that would slow the rate of imperialism. But say we are talking about British Nationalism and the growth and effect it had on the British imperialism I would say it is extremely beneficial because it helped boost the support to expand as an empire because of the idea of the your home nation pushing some weight to make it easier to go out and expand as a nation. So it can either be an obstical or a massive boost

Nationalism, and believing that one's own country is better than all others made colonizers treat other races and nationalities badly. King Leopold II and his men killed 10 million Africans. Some of his men could only live with doing these horrible things by drilling into their brains that Africans deserve it.

The White Man's Burden is an example of nationalism and it drove Europeans to imperialize.
