The Civil Rights movement was a period in time when black people had started to try to fight against laws that had kept them segregated. There are many ways that black people have been segregated including black codes, school segregation, red lining, and segregation in buses. Red lining was when black communities had been marked red causing them to not be able to get loans or get expensive loans. Black codes were when black people had to live in certain areas to keep them away from white people. School segregation had happened when black students weren’t allowed to go to white only school which hadn’t ended until 1954. At first black students had to be protected against white people to keep them safe. Black people had to sit at the back of the bus while white people sat at the front until Rosa Parks got arrested for not standing up and letting a white man sit down causing a boycott against buses.

The speech shows the historical oppression face by african americans, starting from slavery to racial segregation, over the time span of 344 years. Despite this Martin tells them that they need to stay productive and responsible as african americans no matter how u felt or how u feel . while this serves as a problem it makes it difficult to make a positive contribution to society. Dr.M main points were that we must maintain dignity and self-respect, seizing new opportunities and to strive for the better and come together and make binds with the enemy, and to follow your dreams with all you have .

Segregation started in america after the 13th amendment freeing slaves. This caused the start of segregation because white people felt they could never coincide together so, these laws were made. It first started with jim crow laws which basically controlled the lives of black people and what then can and can't do. So when segregation was installed it was known as jim crow laws. With these new law it seperated many things like schools to residential areas to public parks to theaters to pools to cemeteries, asylums, jails and residential homes. In 1948 is when things started to change with the new housing laws due to the pressure of NAACP. After this many other civil rights movements happened like rosa parks not giving up her seat, Dr. Martin luther King speeches, and protest. Through all these black people were still met with violence for some time but they got us to where we are today.

Brown v Board of Education

Brown v Board of Education was a Supreme Court Case in 1954, that ruled unanimously that racial segregation in schools was unconstitutional. The “Separate but equal” phrase came from the Plessy v Ferguson case in 1896 that allowed segregation as long as both places were equal. During the 1950’s the NAACP was challenging the segregation laws especially in public schools. The cases verdict was “separate but equal” was in fact not equal at all. Many schools in the south denied desegregation. For example, In Arkansas, they would not let 9 black kids attend high school and had the national guard to prevent that. But the president (Eisenhower) sent federal troops down to make them just go to school. This was a big event that help start the Civil RIghts Movement.

During the 1950’s many Americans saw great economic growth and change. More houses were built and wages went up for the regular working class for everyone except, African Americans. They were segregated from the rest of society and had to deal with Jim Crow laws, Black Codes, and couldn’t even live in the same vicinity as white people as it was thought that Black people would bring the value of a neighborhood down. Black Americans couldn’t even get the same education as schools found loopholes in the laws at the time. With the support of people like Martin Luther King Jr. and stories like Rosa Parks, and the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the Civil Rights Movement started. - Caleb Noble

Frenchtown Neighborhood in Tallahassee Florida (marvin)

The frenchtown neighborhood is recognized as the oldest historically black community in the state of florida, during the roaring 20s residents used to say that frenchtown was the hot spot for live entertainment and dancing. The better block movement was implemented by older residents of french town that display their community’s rich history and pride through the temporary establishment, that created plans for the local community to be more designed and upgraded. But as the white population migrated to the suburbs later on , this affected french towns economic disinvestments such as local business, housing declined and crime rates increased.while being very segregated, the town has bettered by reintroducing the better block movement to reinvoke their history and their community is now more developed as they created the EAP (engagement action plan) which made engaging events for the town and advertise the use of the better block movement that was held in the streets.

Better neighborhood for French Town

The French town planning for a better block is an event where students came up with both short and long term ideas to better the block. One of their short term ideas was to set up many businesses like pop up businesses, passive and active open spaces, and pedestrian friendly streets capping. Some of their long term goals were for the neighborhood that ranged from creating an intercultural district along Macomb Street andresidential urban infill in the D-Street district; and develop a district that will serve as a transition between FSU and the Frenchtown neighborhood. The history of french town begins when “ Gilbert du Motier, the Marquis de Lafayette, received a township from the Lafayette Land Grant” After this he brought many french men in hopes of obtaining a large farming plantation but his goal were not realized so many of the french workers moved.

Brown v Board of Education

Brown vs Board of Education started over Oliver Brown daughter Linda Brown was denied entrance to an all-white school. Arguing against the supreme court. Brown claimed that schools for black children weren’t as equal to black children and segregation had violated the 14th amendment. In the verdict, the Supreme Court did not specify how the schools should be changed, but the Supreme Court would have a separate hearing in May 1955. Brown had won the case, and the schools would have to allow black children into their school. The impact of Brown vs Board would lead up to Runyon vs McCary which wouldn’t let black children into private schools. Brown vs Board of education became indecisively a precedent to help laws get overturned.

Frenchtown Neighborhoods in Tallahassee, Florida - Janiyah L.

Frenchtown was bought by Gilbert du Motier, originally intended to establish a large farming plantation. Mortier brought French laborers to this land, but his idea wasn’t working, many of the laborers left, but there were ones who stayed, now the land is known as Frenchtown. Many emancipated Africans Americans relocated to Frenchtown, this neighborhood contained its own residences, businesses, churches, parks, a bus system, etc. Local black-owned businesses flourished in Frenchtown, which became the central hub of African American culture and community during the Harlem Renaissance. Tallahassee was a very segregated city, despite the achievements of the Civil Rights movement and existing desegregation laws. As a large majority of white population migrated to the suburbs, Frenchtown began to feel the effects of economic disinvestment. But Frenchtown became a Redevelopment area in 2000, and now celebrates its rich, vibrant history.

Black people couldnt go to the same school as whites because they had the “separate but equal” in play so they had their own schools, but these schools were not equal to schools for the whites. So when Oliver Brown brought his daughter to an all white school and she was denied access he took the board of education to court. The Brown v. Board of Education case that ended up getting to the supreme court in 1952. Where he was trying to prove segregation in public schools was not constitutional, and that it is a violation of the 14th amendment. Finally in 1954 the court agreed that it was wrong and gave the whites a sense of inferiority, and they decided “separate but equal” had no place in schools. This case was a big step in the civil rights movement.

“At Zion Hill” Speech by Martin Luther King Jr.

In 1962 Martin Luther king jr went to Zion hill to talk of the dilemma and challenges that “Negros” faced for year. Martin Luther King Jr was one of the people who pushed for civil rights, to stop the segregation. When he was at Zion Hill to tell people to know the history of the “negro” so they can have a better understanding of all the things that colored people have been through, starting with slave that last over 200 year which lead to segration due to their skin color. He states, “even after slavery end the negro discovred the he was confronting a different type of slavery.” Therefore he is trying to point out that even though the white believes that colored people are “free” they still feel like they are in still in slavery. He want the “Negro race” to know even though it would be a challenge to make change, he want them to develop and maintain a sesne of digity, and self respect. He want them them to remember that they are somebody and not let the other race make them believe that they’re nobody.

After the Civil war and the adopment of the 13th amendment that regarded blacks as no longer slaves but as freedmen and freedwomen and the 14th that granted rights.Even though the 14th and 13th amendment recognized freedmen and women as equal in the sights of the law they were never equal.As the most famous case that birth the era of segregation we had plessy v ferguson that resulted the phrase “separate but equal” in which the supreme court ruled that you could have separate accommodations but they have to be equal. And when the corrupt bargain of the 1860 election that remove federal troops from the south Jim crows laws begin, these laws were laws that undermined the rights of the freedpeople.These laws hinder the freedpeople from making any ecomicall but all this came to an end when the case Brown vs Board of Education was brought in front of the supreme court that ruled that the segregation of public school could undermine the constitution and therefore any segregation could undermined the constitutional and made it illegal.-Damario Gentles

Frenchtown Neighborhood in Tallahassee, Florida

General Lafayette received French Town in 1825 and made it a town without slavery. This attracted French and black settlers. Frenchtown started flourishing into the 60’s with small businesses and many black residents moving in. At the end of Jim Crow they saw a economic decline, wages lowered and local businesses went out of business from 1974 to 1995. Many black residents left and the town continued to roll downhill. The french town better block program helped students revive their community. They set up a way to make intercultural communities along Malcomb St to better the long term future of the town. -Micah Gregory

Martin Luther King at Zion Hill -David Parker

Martin Luther King at Zion Hill is a spoken word album, released in 1962. The album was a record of MLK jr's speech at Zion Hill Baptist Church. In his speech MLK refutes some claims about the civil rights movement and black people as a whole. One such claim is how black americans are "lazy" and "irresponsible" when compared to their white contemporaries. MLK states that is "The demands of history" and how although they were expected to be just as "productive, as resourceful and as responsible" he notes that whites simply never had the nearly 400 years of racial segregation, political and economic domination, and plain old humiliation holding them down. They never "these disadvantages". King's conclusion when faced with such hardship is the simple and overwhelmingly hopeful viewpoint to "be the best of whatever you are."
