The Love Canal was an event that occurred in the late 1970s, in Niagra Falls, New York. This area is known as a site of environmental disaster. This place decades ago was known as an area to dump toxic chemicals, but as time went on they forgot about the chemical dumping that had happened and built a whole community on the land, it would go on to kill and also harm several hundreds of residents of the homes that were made on the land above the toxic chemicals in the ground.

Toxic Contamination: There was toxic contamination within the environment because of the Love Canal because of all the toxic chemicals that they had dumped all over the land, and it is believed that there were over 21,000 tons of chemicals dumped on the land that then went on to seep into the ground and the groundwater.

Long-term environmental damage: The long-term effects on the environment took several years to fix due to the amount of toxic chemicals on the land, but to this day, there are still issues with the environment in that location, such as ecological scars in the areas where the toxic chemicals were dumped.

Property Devaluation: The toxins being exposed to the property lowered all the prices of the land and the things that are near it, and it also made it difficult for the neighborhoods surrounding the area to sell homes because of the risk that came with living there.

Lost Trust: The people who had lived there had lost all sorts of trust in the government and the corporations that were involved. They lost all sorts of trust in those people because of the lack of information that they had about what was surrounding the areas.

Community Activism: When the issue was first becoming an issue, there wasn't enough attention being drawn to the problem so the community brought it to the attention of the government and others who could help.

Relocation: When the event was brought to the attention of the government, they made the decison to help relocate at least 800 families through 1978-1980, and gave up to 20 million in compensation and help overall to the situation.

Cleanup: The cleanup of Love Canal was initiated under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act also known as the Superfund law. Over several years, the EPA removed contaminated soil and capped the remaining waste, preventing further exposure to toxic substances.

Current Day: Still to this day the area is under supervision to make sure that there will be no more spreading or return of the toxic chemicals.
