I also wanted to extend to all of you a warm welcome to the N528: Victimology course. As Dr. C mentioned, since this course is designed to have us work together, I will also provide you with information about myself. I live in Buck County, Pennsylvania. I frequently have the opportunity to watch deer waling in my yard while I enjoy meals with my family. I am excited to finally enjoy the warmer and longer days of light that are part of the wonders of spring. I started working at Drexel in 2003 and went full time in 2006. I teach in both online and in person on Drexel campus. As Dr. C shared, we had the honor of staying on a domestic violence compound in Bolivia while we worked with psychologists, prosecutors and judges regarding enhanced assessment of children exposed to sexual violence. Below is a picture that includes both myself and Dr. C donating items to a medical clinical that was on the grounds of the compound we stayed at during our time in Bolivia.
I look forward to "seeing" and working with all of you online this quarter.
Dr. Fay-Hillier (aka Dr. F-H)

Greetings from Dr. Clements (Dr. C): the Chair of the Forensic Certificate Program Online

Greetings everyone! Welcome to NURS 528: Victimology. Spring is here! (and of course, so is the new academic quarter). :-)

I wanted to stop by, as the Course Chair for the Forensic Certificate Program Online, to extend my welcome and greetings. The forensic courses tend to be very exciting, including thought provoking educational material and subsequent lively discussions [Victimology, paired with NURS 533: Forensic Mental Health, and, NURS 519: Foundations of Forensic Science, comprise those needed to make application for the certificate. If you are interested, please contact your Academic Advisor for more information].

I am certain you will enjoy the Victimology course, as Dr. Fay-Hillier (Dr. F-H) is an outstanding forensic clinician and educator. Dr. F-H and I have worked together as colleagues in the psychiatric and forensic areas of healthcare for over the past 25 years. For example, this is a photo from a trip to Bolivia in 2011where Dr. F-H and I traveled with a team of healthcare consultants, with various clinical backgrounds, from Drexel CNHP. As the two forensic healthcare clinicians, our role was to work with forensic psychologists, public DAs/prosecutors and regional court judges regarding enhanced assessment of children exposed to sexual violence. Below is a photo of Dr. F-H and I just before we spoke for several hours to judges, prosecutors, and medical examiners from every province within Bolivia. We spoke on the neurobiology of trauma in children who had been exposed to sexual and physical violence, and, the impact on interface with the judicial system. When not lecturing, we spent our time/ resided in a Domestic Violence Shelter/compound, where the walls of our sleeping quarters and living areas were made of cinder blocks, and, there was no hot water for showers (and since this was all located at over 14,000 feet in the Andes mountain range, needless to say, the water was freezing cold, the internet ran at 54.4. dial-up modem rate, and, the entire journey made everyone very appreciative of all that we take for granted in our first world nation). Two things that I really did enjoy was that alpacas were everywhere and I fell in love with quinoa [which is basically eaten at every meal there…and now whenever I see it on a restaurant menu, I simply must have it!)].

As I wrap up my brief greeting, I want to extend my very best wishes for your journey through learning about the theory, assessment, and clinical interventions as these relate to working with victims/survivors of violence and crime in the healthcare setting.

Best wishes as you proceed and for a good day (and, I hope to work with some of you in the other two forensic courses).

Dr. Clements (Dr. C)

Hi My Name is Nicole Byers. I live in York Pennsylvania. I am 2.5 hours from Philadelphia, PA. 1 hour from Baltimore. I am enrolled in the Post-Master’s Pediatric Primary Care Certificate program. I also pursue a certificate in forensic nursing. I am interested in finding out how to better help rehabilitate victims and offenders. I worked in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) where we frequently cared for patients diagnosed with non-accidental trauma (child abuse). In my Family Nurse Practitioner program I screened for child abuse, intimate partner violence and elder abuse. In this class I hope to learn ways to try and prevent children from becoming offenders and help those who have been victims. 5)	Anything else you would like to share?I have a son that turned 2 in November.

Hello,My name is Samantha and I am from Cleveland, Ohio (Go Tribe!). I currently work at Akron Children's Hospital as a pediatric RN on the Transitional Care Unit. I absolutely adore kids so it's the perfect fit for me. :) Previously I had worked on a hospice/oncology unit with adults. I have my BSN and am in the MSN: Innovation track at Drexel. I find crime and forensic cases to be fascinating. I wanted to learn more about how a nurse can be involved in all the different aspects of forensics. I do not have any previous experience working with victims or survivors of interpersonal crime/ violence. I will be taking this class to complete my forensics certificate and look forward to gaining more knowledge related to forensics and nursing. Looking forward to learning and interacting with all of you,Samantha

I have my ASN and BSN and I am working on my MSN in the Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner track. I work as a rounding nurse for the pediatric surgeon in our region. I enrolled in this course because we see many abused infants, and I wanted to understand more about the study of victimology so I can have the knowledge need to improve outcomes for my patients. I want to learn more about how to approach parents who are part of the family but also possible perps.

Below is my spring picture which was taken this Easter. The stunning girl in the picture with me is my soon to be wife, Victoria. We are getting married on October 27th of this year. The white fluff-ball is our dog name Repo. He is named “Repo” because he was repossessed by a pet financing company, so my fiancé adopted him. We all enjoy spending our time with family or studying (my fiancé is almost done with her doctorate in pharmacy). Good luck this semester.

Hi everyone! My name is Melissa Dazo and I live in Washington DC where I have worked at Children's National in the CICU as a bedside RN for the past two and half years. I obtained my BSN at Villanova University and began my career in Philadelphia where I worked on an adolescent/nephrology unit for over two years. I chose to take this course because of my previous experience working with adolescents in an urban environment, all of the news and media this past year regarding sexual violence, and my interest in completing SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) training at work. I am in the Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner track and I hope to learn more about identifying victims and how to help victims in an appropriate way. On a lighter note, today I am continuing to celebrate the victory of the Villanova Wildcats in the NCAA tournament from last night. Another photo that reminds me of spring is the cherry blossoms in DC. The picture shown is one my mom took a few years ago during their bloom. I am looking forward to learning a lot this quarter!

Hi everyone! My name is Lauren Lehan and I am located in Hamilton, New Jersey. I am from the Jersey Shore and spend much of my time there along the beach. I moved closer to Philadelphia because I am a NICU nurse at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia where I have been employed since obtaining my BSN from Seton Hall University. I am currently pursing my MSN, enrolled in the Primary Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program. I am interested in this course because I have never taken a course like it and it is a side of nursing that I feel is often unexplored. I have no experience in working with victims or survivors of any sort of crime. I thought this course would be a good challenge for myself and would take me outside of my comfort zone. Additionally, oftentimes we hear about abuse and sexual assault reports regarding the pediatric population and I thought it would be helpful to my future profession to take this course and maybe open up new opportunities in the field of nursing I would otherwise be unaware of. From this course I hope to better understand why crimes occur and better understand both victims and their offenders. I look forward to learning a lot of new information his term. The picture below is of me and my fiancé Ian taken two weeks ago on a vacation in Charleston, where spring has already sprung! We will be getting married on October 21st of this year! Good luck this term everyone!

Hello everyone, my name is Katelyn Hibbert and I am currently located in New Bern, NC working in a CVICU at Vidant Medical Center. I was interested in taking this course because every time I had an elective I needed to take, I took a forensic nursing course. It has always been something that has interested me and with the completion of this course, I will have a certificate in Forensic nursing. I don’t have much experience working directly with victims per say. However, I have worked in a trauma step-down unit a few years ago in which we would get stable trauma victims (stab wounds, blunt trauma, etc.). I hope to learn how to better communicate with people when I do encounter those who have been through some type of traumatic experience.
