This fear was the Red Death, a deadly sickness. They thought they were successful, but the Red Death came to them anyway. In the story there is a horrible sickness going around that kills you almost instantly. The kings reaction to this is he and his closet people hid away with each other from the sickness. In the end though it end's up not working out because they all end up dying.
