         <description><![CDATA[<div>The emperor was the top rank but was only a figurehead while the shogun was really the one in power. Below him were the daimyo. below the daimyo were the powerful landholding samurai. then under them were just the regular samurai warriors. then it was peasants and artisans. and at the very bottom were merchants although they became more important later on.</div>]]></description>
