The French school system has historically focused on a standardized curriculum and a centralized approach, while Danish independent schools have a more decentralized approach. Danish independent schools often emphasize community and grant teachers a high degree of freedom to plan their lessons. This creates a more diverse and adaptable learning environment.

In France, the traditional system is characterized by central guidelines and standardized exams, which can limit flexibility. Danish independent schools, on the other hand, often value collaboration and community, providing teachers with space to tailor instruction according to students' needs and interests. This leads to a more diverse educational environment that can foster creativity and engagement among both students and teachers.

Thomas

Today, we have discussed the French school system. It has surprised me that there is such a high percentage of students who do not complete their education, and so few pursue higher education. I wonder why children with special needs do not seem to be better integrated into regular education. I believe Denmark and France could learn a lot from each other through exchange, so I'm pleased that our school has found a partner school in Lille, France, and hopefully, we can send our students there in 2024.

The result of the day :) We’ve sunburned, so I’ve decided to share some facts about Estonian educational system and my school experience. Mayme it will be of some kind of interest for you.
Strengths of Estonian education
According to PISA 2022, the knowledge of Estonian children is at the top in the world and at the absolute top in Europe. The results of our students fell less compared to other countries, which shows that we were able to organize education quite well during the corona crisis.
Estonian children believe that their results are in their own hands and that their success is the result of their effort. Currently, schools are aimed at developing students’ self-controlled skills providing them with more choice, freedom and flexibility in learning to make them feel whole responsibility for the education process. In this term, we follow the principles of Lifelong Learning strategy in education.
Estonian children feel safe at school. However, the problem of bullying is a hot topic, which is being discussed and solved through implementation of different kinds of anti bullying programmes and initiatives, such KiVa and Tore.
A great emphasis is put on the students’ physical wellbeing and development, as it is directly influences on their mental health. Moreover, every third 1st-grader child in Estonia is overweight. That’s why 206 Estonian schools, i.e. 40% of all general education schools, have joined the Schools in Motion programme. devised by Tartu University Move Lab. Our school is an active partaker of the program.
With the structure of the Estonian educational system you can get acquainted here.

As I immerse myself in English and French, every day I remember more and more words and expressions in French. This is a great opportunity to expand my language stock and practice in a natural language environment. After all, I haven't practiced French since the beginning of the pandemic. It is also a great experience to understand how you can learn and experience new things in another language, even if you don't know the language or don't know it well. From next year our children will study only in Estonian, and I will need this experience to understand and better organise the learning process.

The different school systems in the European countries are very different from one another.

In Denmark we have learning goals but not a strict curriculum and the teachers are free to choose their own methods and to organise the lessons as they please.

The danish schools are taking care of the children with special needs so they get a feeling of belonging and succeeding.

The most important thing is to teach the students how to investigate and critical thinking.

I hope that we can learn from and share ideas with France and the other countries in Erasmus +!

Today I have learned about the French school system. I'm surprised how many tha doesn't finish collége. That it is only 80 %. For me it seems, that the french school system is strict. And the curriculum seems vere strict as well. In Denmark I like, that the student-teacher relationship is very close, and there is a tradition to help the student as much as possible, so they get through public school and will continue with an education afterwards. I think it means a lot, that we have education obligation and that we have the culture we have. For me it seems, that the french school system is for the brave kids and they loose some kids with difficulties. The Danish school system is for almost everybody. We do have difficulties with some kids, but the school system tries somehow to help those kids. Thank you for a nice day 🙃

Education in France seems to be quite strict. Differently from my country, students aren’t compulsorily at school till the age of 18, but they are directed to a certain area according to their achievement. After 16 years old, they may choose if they want to proceed to the next level, being it in a vocational area to get to the world of work at the end or the lycée in which they proceed to university.

This system has some advantages but I believe it also brings some disadvantages because the young people that don’t want to study, they can work, but some of them do nothing and this can also bring some problems to the society.

Reflecting on Education is not a simple matter because we only know an educational system well if we experience it. In relation to the French system, it depends, in some cases, on the region where the schools are located. The characteristics of the French system are based on the authority of the teacher and often on the traditional method, with a more distant relationship between teacher and student. However, according to my personal experience and visits to some schools in France, there is a good relationship between teachers and their students.

One of the characteristics that seems positive to me is the possibility of students being able to follow a professional path and do so at school, with periods of internship in companies, entities linked to the areas that interest them, always being accompanied by teachers.
