Jing-Mei was battling with her mother and herself about what she wanted and believed. An Example of a external conflict is Jing-Mei's mothers constant ridicule and her pushing Jing-Mei to do things she does not want to do. Jing-Mei say this while frustrated with her mother  "Why should I? I'm not a genius."
