" Only two kind of daughters..."Those who are obedient and those who follow
their own mind! Only one kind of daughter can live in this house. Obedient daughter!" Jing-Mei's mother believes there are two kinds of daughters and Jing-Mei is not like the one her mother wants.

Jing-Mei comes to the conclusion that she will not be capable to be the things that her mother wishes of her is an example of one of the many internal conflicts in the story. In this quote Jing-Mei comes to a realization "Unlike my mother, I did not believe I could be anything I wanted to be, I could only be me." Jing-Mei was battling with her mother and herself about what she wanted and believed. An Example of a external conflict is Jing-Mei's mothers constant ridicule and her pushing Jing-Mei to do things she does not want to do. Jing-Mei say this while frustrated with her mother "Why should I? I'm not a genius." To Jing-Mei her mother is this forceful person who is not letting her be herself which causes a lot of her internal conflicts.
