When walking back to Boston he just sees his fellow comrades fall due to the Patriots and when someone tries to help another soldier they get shot and die too

He is frightened and scared, and overall, fears for his life. Due to his stress, he cannot keep his mouth shut the day before the raid, which allows the colonists to spy on and devise a plan on retaliating against the raid.
