Armenia was the very first country to make Christianity its official religion. During the 15th century, Armenia joined the Ottoman Empire, which was predominately Muslim.

Because Armenians were Christians in a place full of Muslims, they were not treated fairly and they were almost never trusted.

The first Armenian massacre was from 1894 to 1896. The Turks would invade Armenian villages. Hundreds of thousands of Armenians were killed during this time.

The Armenian Genocide was from 1915 to 1917. This genocide was thought of as the worst genocide in history because of the things that went on during it.

The number of Armenians killed ranges from hundreds of thousands to around 1.5 million. In 1914, The Ottoman Empire began spreading propaganda about the Armenians. They would say that the Armenians were horrible people that were ruining the Ottoman Empire.

In 1915, the Ottoman Empire issues a law stating that all Armenians need to be eliminated. Turks and Kurds began attacking Armenian villages. They then said that all Armenians (except for the sick) had to be escorted out of the Ottoman Empire within five days. The person who issued this law was named Talat Bey.

In April of 1915, preparation for the genocide begins. Many important Armenian buildings, such as churches and schools, were burnt down. On April 24th, many Armenian teachers and other people of importance were taken away. This day is now observed by Armenians in memory of the genocide.

The Armenians could only take what they could carry, meaning they wouldn't be able to take much. All money in banks would be taken by the government.

For most Armenians, relocation meant doing on death marches. They would be forced to walk for weeks without food and water with no breaks. While this was happening, the Turks and Kurds would attack them, taking anything they could from the Armenians. Any children they found would be forced to live with a Turkish family.

There were some Armenians, however, that escaped deportation. They escaped into Russia or, if given the chance, converted to Islam. Some Greeks, Turks, and Kurds also risked their lives by hiding Armenians.

All places the Armenians were deported to had a few things in common. They all had mostly Muslim residents, they were in generally undesirable places (such as deserts), and they were all really far away from their original homes.

A group called The Young Turks made killing squads and began killing Armenians by drowning them, throwing them off cliffs, crucifying them, or burying them alive.

The Ottoman Empire tried to do everything they could to not let the information about the genocide get to the rest of the world. They did not succeed in this, as reporters began to talk about the genocide, describing how the Armenians were being stabbed, beaten, deported, and robbed. Many countries, such as the US, were not happy about what the Ottoman Empire was doing.
