In tech, I learned a lot of things that I thought that would only be available in the future! Meaning, that I learned how to code real life robots. One of the robots I learned about was a robot named Ohbot. With Ohbot, you can code him online with a program called Scratch. He is very fun to code!

In science, we had a big unit about the human body. We all were different kind of doctors. I was a Neurologist, and the other things that other people were were, infectious disease specialists, gastroenterologists, pulmonologists, cardiologists, and orthopedic surgeons. We taught our medical clinics about our specialty, and then, we did the Grand Rounds! In the Grand Rounds, each clinic gets a card that tells about a person who has some sort of disease. You are supposed to make a PowerPoint/Sway about how to cure the disease, and all that good stuff.

Finally, in social studies, the main thing we learned about and are continuing to learn about is Westward Expansion. We started out learning about all the purchases, acquisitions, and sessions. Then, we learned about some different groups, like the Forty Niners, Nez Perces, Mormons, etc. After that, we started to learn about, and continue to learn about, the Oregon Trail. Studying what they needed to bring, the cost, the weight, and much more.

My year has been fun. With all the challenges, like with fidgets hard things, and happy things that we have come across, it has been very fun. I really hope the rest of it is going to be just as fun!

This is my 3rd quarter reflection on this year so far, it has been quite good. I have been challenged in many ways from science to social studies. I have really learned a lot of things like the formula for pi and volume! This year I have learned a bunch of things from how to use a fidget to understanding exponents

In Science I was able to get a lot done in code blue, I learned what a vaccine actually does, and I learned more things outside of my deep understanding of the circulatory system and was able to do a good job with the grand rounds task. I understood what type 2 diabetes is and I learned what a couple other diseases

I also am really digging the social studies unit that we are doing currently, I really have deepened my understanding of the Oregon Trail and I am happy that I am my families leader! My name is Nick Sierra and I am 33. It's kind of funny that we are doing a bunch of tiny simulations (carpet, field trip) inside one big simulation! It really is fun to learn about your countries past when you can actually feel what it was like back then!

Finally, I enjoyed vocabulary. I think that this is fun because learning new words and word parts is pretty interesting. Some make sense (like re: back, again) and some just don't (like nom: law, custom, order). But I really need to catch up on my journal. 

This year has been tough, but I have been able to hold up. With challenges from fidgets to formulas, it really has been a fun year. I've also enjoyed technology, science, social studies, and much more! This year I've learned a bunch of things from how to use a fidget to understanding exponents

 

     Have you ever not understood something, and had to something different to help you better understand? Well, I have, and I needed to be a complex thinker to help me understand. Complex thinking came into play in science, social studies, and math. Complex thinking was also in technology, and art but these three came in first. Complex thinking is important in many areas. 

   In math I was learning pi (3.14, not the yummy type) and I was trying to figure out the area of a circle. Me and Ms. I worked through it even though I still don't fully understand it I have a lot more knowledge then I had before. The complex thinker skills I used were perseverance for continuing to learn. 

   Science was very difficult at times to agree with people in my clinic. For example, me and Emmeline both wanted to be an Orthopedic Surgeon, but I stepped down and let her have it. I used my complex thinker skills seeing that it would just cause more problems later and take more time. Another time was when the whole group was changing the design for the power point, and nobody was listening to anybody else and that was a really difficult time in science some of the skills I used to solve it were Complex Thinker, and Effective Communicator. 

   Finally, in Social Studies I had to be a complex thinker a lot. I needed to be a complex thinker for travelling the Oregon trail. Even back then wagon trains, and families had disagreements about things like what to bring, who should be wagon leader etc. Some of the skills I used were Effective Communicator, and perseverance. 

   So why is being a complex thinker so important? Because it can help you solve problems and dig deeper into things you don't understand yet and building new neural pathways and connections to deepen your understanding of something. Well, what is a complex thinker anyway? A complex thinker is someone that intentionally uses extra time to think through a problem or solve one, and someone that does more work to deepen their knowledge of something. Complex thinking can be found in many different areas.

During my 3rd quarter of school I learned lots of things. But, for my 3rd quarter reflection I'm not going to list all the things that I've learned this quarter. I'm just going to start with three things I learned: technology, social studies, and vocabulary. 

The first thing that I listed is vocabulary. One thing that I learned in vocabulary is customary and metric vocabulary. In customary vocabulary I learned about units of volume, length, and weight. In metric vocabulary I learned about mili, centi, deci, deca, and kilo as prefixes, gram and liter as roots, and meter as a suffix. Metric vocabulary was pretty difficult because I'm used to customary measurement, so it helped a lot to refresh my memory. 

The second thing that I listed is technology. Technology is my favorite subject. I learned how to code on Ohbot using scratch coding. When I first started coding with Ohbot, I didn't really know how to do Ohbot that well. But when I learned more about Ohbot I learned how to do more complex coding. Computers were always my strength in 2nd and 3rd grade. Now that I'm in 4th grade, I am more interested in coding like ohbot. 

The last thing that I listed is social studies. In social studies I learned about the Oregon trail and how people lived on the Oregon trail. I learned about how many people died on the Oregon trail and how much hardship they had to put through. Learning about the Oregon trail was fun. I'm just really excited for our simulation of the Oregon trail. 

In conclusion, I learned a lot of things this quarter. But, I couldn't list all of the things I learned. I just chose three things: technology, social studies, and vocabulary. This is what I learned in my 3rd quarter of the year.    

 

 

 

 

"BUZZZZZ BUZZZZZ" Sounds the alarm. If you're like me, you'll be thinking "5 more minutes", and roll over and fall back asleep then suddenly you hear it going off again. Most people think "Why do I have to go to school for 7 hours and then go home and do homework for 5 days?" But I personally like school because every day I learn a lot about science, writing, and social studies. Especially this year and this 3rd quarter. 

 

In science I have learned a lot about the human body then other years. I have learned about the nervous system for example the 2major sub systems, The autonomic, and the somatic. As for other years (2nd to 3rd grade) I have learned about the heart. The process of learning about the systems was sometimes frustrating but I made it through. I have learned many new things about the human body this year than other years.  

 

In writing I have learned a lot more then other years. This year I have learned about how to write a better five-paragraph essay. However, when I was in 3rd grade I learned the basics of writing a single paragraph. I have also learned about a few introduction strategy. Therefore, I think that I have learned a lot more this year then past years. 

 

In social study's I have learned a lot more than other years. This year I have learned a lot about the history of the USA, for example that many Mormons where killed just because of their religion in the 1800's. As for before I didn’t really learn much about the early US. Therefore,I have that I have learned a lot more this year then past years. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

     This quarter I have been learning a lot about being a complex thinker in math, science, and vocabulary. Being a complex thinker means that you are trying to find another way to do something. It also means to not always do something the easy way but to challenge yourself when something becomes too easy for you instead of just complaining.

     In math this quarter when we are learning/reviewing volume I try to think of multiple ways to solve a problem not just the standard way that I am used to and that is easy. When a problem was hard like the fish tank problem I tried my best, compared my answer with other people and tried to see what I did wrong. I did the same thing when we were doing math with decimals last quarter even if I already knew most of the things that were being taught.

     For science these past couple months we have been doing code blue. During code blue I practiced being a complex thinker when all the clinics were making their presentations. I was doing research on melanin and I explained what it was to my whole clinic because they didn't know and understand what it was and what it did. I was patient and cooperative when they kept interrupting me and asking me questions. I was also a complex thinker while making my science fair project because I thought of many ways to phrase something or show something as well as analyzing my data and the situation when I ran into problems.

     This 3rd quarter in vocabulary I was being a complex thinker when I was using the word parts to find the definition of a word. Sometimes I didn't have to look at the word parts I just knew the words. I also used what I knew about words and word parts to find a pronunciation letter in the middle of a word. When doing word work I tried to find multiple ways to use multiple words in a sentence. Another way that I was a complex thinker is that I challenged myself to think of my own way to state the definition so that it would make sense to me. I also tried to think of fun ways to remember the words.

     Overall, I did a very good job of being a complex thinker in these 3 subjects and more. For the next quarter I will focus on being a quality producer because this quarter I, as you can see, worked on being a complex thinker. This quarter I also improved on turning my work in on time. I think that this was a very good quarter for me and I think the last quarter will be too

In Social Studies we had practice being a community contributor. When we started the Oregon Trail unit we were assigned groups, everybody had to do their part, for example when Joey and Annika were on vacation the week before Spring Break, Elsa and I had a very hard time making decisions because not everyone was pitching in and creating the task easier than it was. 

In Science we also must practice being a community contributor. This is because in Code Blue we have clinic groups and the assignment was to create a PowerPoint and everyone had to work on a slide to make the work go faster. We also had to agree on forms of treatment for our patient, because it was our patient's life we were arguing over. Finally, if someone was sick, we would evenly split the undone work so at the end of the day all the work had been finished.  

Even Math is a place where we must show the skillset of being a community contributor. For example, if somebody doesn’t understand a problem on grid work we all are willing to pitch in and give help and advice. Sometimes if no one understands the problem we all work through the problem until everybody understands. Hilariously, some days we all end up being confused together. 

Why all the kerfuffle about "community contributing", what's so important about it anyway, you may ask? Well without community contributing we all would be grumpy introverts with too much homework. It also makes you feel good when you're a community contributor, because you are helping other people, than those people might return the favor, thus starting the favor circle.
