General Zaroff: The Devil

"Even so zealous a hunter as General Zaroff could not trace him there, he told himself; only the devil himself could follow that complicated trail through the jungle after dark. But, perhaps, the general was a devil..." page 30

This quote foreshadows that the general will not a good person. For example, he hunts humans as a sport because animals no longer interest his maniacal desire to kill. Rainsford had already had thoughts about the fact that General Zaroff might be way worse than he was portrayed when he first met him.

"'But no animal can reason,' objected Rainsford. 'My dear fellow,' said the general, 'there is one that can.' 'But you can't mean-' gasped Rainsford. 'And why not?' 'I can't believe you are serious, General Zaroff. This is a grisly joke.'" page 25

Here, the General expresses his coldness towards human life. Rainsford is shocked, despite his previous view of animals having no feelings while he hunts them. He realizes, without the General saying it, that humans are being hunted on this island by a insane hunter.

The symbol is General Zaroff as the devil. This idea is first introduced when the general was telling Rainsford about his bloodlust. Animals no longer interested him. He moved on to going after humans instead of the animals they were meant to hunt. He wanted to hunt something with intellect and reason.

The symbol, General Zaroff, is represented by the devil. They share the same twisted mindset of hunting their own kind, despite knowing of the bad morale that it results in. The consequences that could be presented do not exist, for they have created their own society on which they rule how they like.

General Zaroff is developed by how he grew up. His father gave him a gun when he was a 5 year old. His whole life he hunted different animals, which led to him joining the army. There, he killed humans as well. He states that he hunted every kind of game out there. This results in his boredom of killing things without intelligence or a plan to escape.

General Zaroff's obsession with killing humans ends by getting killed by his human prey. He finally met his end at the hands of a hunter who had the same mindset as him, but he was the prey. Outsmarted by his own kind, much like he did, he will now sleep forever.
