 Many films, TV shows and text attempt to engage the audience into enjoying the show by using relatable and likeable characters. However some may say that the flaw in this would be that the characters are too glamorous with perfect lives.  A show that shows the authentic teenagers is Freaks and Geeks that explores issues and problems that teenagers go through when they form new social groups. This is most likely the representation of the majority of the teenage audience as they have experienced this first hand or have seen one of their close friends go through.This therefore allows the viewers to relate to the characters in the show.This is because the intended audience for the show is directed to mainly teenagers between the ages of 15-18 making the audience connect to the characters of Freaks and Geeks making it more likely for the show to be successful.This is done through the construction of relatable and likeable characters, engaging plot and generic setting of a sit com. Because of this, this makes Freaks and Geeks a successful television show that is iconic and long lasting for the audience.

Black Mirror episode “Fifteen Million Merits” has both satire and contains parodies of our modern society, presenting more of society’s floors and peaks than reality TV. The episode uses a satire version of work, the episode also contains its own parody reality TV show and the episode has been designed to have an artificial setting with no authenticity relating to our obsession with the virtual world. Fifteen Million merits shows how a fictional text can be more real then a “reality” TV show.

Although they attempt to replicate reality they try to make it more interesting by exaggerating what we see, therefore not an actual depiction of reality. Some of the most distorted representations of our world can have the most accurate depictions of reality. The Black Mirror episode “15 Million Merits” uses satire to show how most reality TV is unrealistic and does not give a true representation of our world. It also explores the issue of the sexualisation of women in the media, and shows the lack of authenticity we have in our society.

The only thing that is real about ‘reality’ TV show is the people and objects that are in, it. Meanwhile other shows such as Black Mirror “Men against fire” are constructed to confront society’s issues that no one wants to talk about. Black Mirror uses plot, character and technology to send a message to make us reflect on ourselves. In men against fire the technology is used to de-humanise people to get soldiers to kill “roaches” like to brainwash German soldiers in WW2 to kill Jews. The character is used to find the truth about the “roaches” as they turn out to be human. The plot Is constructed to see the soldiers trauma in war and the atrocities they make, and the impact of he-humanising people.
