They called it galloping Gertie because the enginers name was Gertie .They said it was galloping because it would wave back and forth with the force of the heavy wind.

When we watched the videos the bridge was in stress. It was bending and practically bouncing up and down. (This  was caused by a 40 mph wind!) Later in the video they added Gerties to the new bridge  so there was more structure and it hopefully won't break. ( It shouldn't!) 
They call it Galloping Gertie because it looked like it was galloping when the winds came and  caused it to move like that but after the event they added Gerties for more structure.

Unlike the George Washington Bridge and the Brooklyn Bridge  the Tacoma bridge was unsuccesful. They called it galloping Gertie because the strong winds will make it swing. It again did not have enough support. People would go on it just for the bumpy ride. A 40 MPH wind made a poorly structured Tacoma bridge crash in 1940. Also, another reason that "galloping Gertie" fell was because they did not have modern day equipment to build a good enough bridge.
