I've used these blending drums with very young learners (VYLs), especially those who are not quite aware of their mouth movements.

I tell them that they are my special drums and get them to say a sound when I hit a letter card on a drum. So they have to do it louder for the first drum, the bigger one; and softer for the second one. I hit the drums one by one (with a chopstick or a pencil) faster and faster so that the kids are also saying the sounds faster together until they are blending them. You can finish off by hitting the two drums at the same time.

The VYLs love the actions and they become aware of what blending or saying two sounds quickly together actually means.

I found it interesting to use the battery operated lights to help YLs to learn how to segmenting. When practising Oral Segmenting, YLs listen to the teacher saying a word, then they break it down into multiple sounds, and press the light to be able to count how many sounds in the that word.
Also, teacher can set it up as a game and see who can be the fastest to find out how many sounds there are in different words.

I use this activity with YLs who have learnt a set of sounds.
For prep you need to make a dice with a set of sounds ie. 's, t, a , p , n ,i' on it and a table with 3 columns.
Write the letter that they have tossed on the 3 columns.
How to play:
Toss the dice, read, say the sound and write it down in the column, do it for 2 more times. Get the child to blend and say the word. Give them a point if they are correct.

This video shows how to use three different colours of strings to teach blending and segmenting. By pulling on the strings, the students can get the sense of blending sounds. And this is also a multisensory activity :)

The first video shows the class teacher used the physical objects to engaged the children to sound out the phonemes in a word. And the second one in the video using the method of the sound fingers, which is my favorite method to teach my own child, it is also a easy way to count the individual sounds and put them together and sound out a particular word.
