Hello! My name is Eddext Chua, and I have a strong interest in Philippine pop culture, which reflects the creativity and identity of Filipinos today. I enjoy following trends that shape modern Filipino lifestyles, particularly in OPM (Original Pilipino Music), P-Pop, mobile gaming, streetwear fashion, and social media trends. Music has always been a big part of Filipino culture, and I appreciate how OPM continues to evolve with new artists. Similarly, P-Pop groups like BINI have gained international recognition. In the gaming world, Mobile Legends has become a dominant force in the Philippines. Meanwhile, streetwear fashion, influenced by global trends, has created a strong sense of self-expression among young Filipinos. Lastly, social media platforms like TikTok play a major role in shaping entertainment and culture in the country today.

For this Padlet, I would like to feature P-Pop (Pinoy Pop) as a contemporary Philippine pop culture phenomenon. P-Pop is the Filipino adaptation of the global pop genre, particularly inspired by K-Pop, but infused with local musical influences, language, and identity. Groups like SB19, BINI, and ALAMAT have gained a massive following, not just in the Philippines but also internationally. These artists train intensively in singing, dancing, and stage performance, bringing a new level of professionalism to the Philippine music industry. The rise of P-Pop represents the Philippines’ growing presence in the global music scene and provides an avenue for young Filipinos to take pride in local talent.

Analysis Using Semiotics Theory

P-Pop is more than just a musical genre—it is rich in symbols and meanings that resonate with Filipino culture. Using Semiotics Theory, we can analyze how P-Pop groups construct their identity through visuals, lyrics, and performances. For example, SB19 incorporates Filipino language, national symbols, and traditional elements into their songs and music videos. Their song "MAPA" combines "Mama" and "Papa," symbolizing love and gratitude toward parents. Similarly, ALAMAT integrates regional dialects and cultural patterns into their fashion and branding, showing the diversity of the Philippines. These elements allow P-Pop to be both globally appealing and locally authentic.

Beyond music, P-Pop also influences Filipino youth by shaping trends in fashion, language, and fan culture. Fans, known as "A'TIN" (SB19), "Blooms" (BINI), and "Magiliw" (ALAMAT), create a strong community centered around their favorite groups. The use of fan chants, social media hashtags, and merchandise contributes to a new wave of Filipino pop identity. This movement empowers local artists and redefines the Philippine entertainment industry, proving that Filipino talent can compete on a global scale.
