Many people volunteered, so it was tons of competition. 250 people volunteered to parachute, and only 110 were selected for training. Only 33 paratroopers were chosen actually parachuted into Egypt. Their purpose was to  help the allied efforts in Europe and make contact with the partisan resistance fighters. She was caught almost imediatly. She was taken to prison and was questioned about her mission. She was tortured, threatened, but did not say a word. Hannah was tied to a chair for 3 days and was whipped but did not release any information. Even when they threatened to arrest her mother, she refused. So they arrested her mother and they came face to face for the first time in 5 years. Her mother was also arrested, and kept in prison. She communicated with other prisoners by using big cut our letters and pressed them against the window one by one. Hannah also tried keeping other prisoners spirits up by singing loudly. She used her great writing skills to write poems in a diary. Her mother was released from prison in September 1944.
