The arch could support much more weight than a standard squared open area and was used to aid in relieving tension from structures. Tension would flow downwards from an arch and into support beams. Arches were a visual and engineering marvel. They were extremely important in Roman architecture and greatly contributed to multiple stunning Roman structures, one of which is the Colosseum.

Concrete is likely the most valuable building material the world has ever discovered. When Romans first made concrete, they used a mixture of stone, sand, and water for a liquid-like mixture of rocks that would harden into solid stone after time. Later, however, the Romans added another material to the mix which expanded the capabilities of concrete even further. As volcanic ash was included, concrete became both stronger and stretchier. Concrete could be poured into molds and then used as singular building blocks, which was used to mass-produce arches.

Domes, like arches, were a Roman engineering and architectural marvel. Domes were used to add a round, circular roof onto structures. Not only were they useful, but also a beautiful and important part of grand Roman buildings. The Romans were very strategical about their domes and used concrete containing heavy rocks for the bottom and concrete containing very light rocks, usually pumice, for the top. This configuration of stone as well as an oculus in the center made it so that their domes wouldn't collapse in on themselves.
