A 14 paged book in that extends like an accordion due to the assemblage. The story follows two lovers on a short trip to stargaze.

Even as my first portfolio project, this was my favorite to work on. I’d love to revisit this story and expand upon the characters in the future.

A small zine focusing entirely on visuals. Collage elements, whether supplemental or entirely based upon, were necessary in this project. 

This project was really fun to work on, even though I went through 5 different concepts before landing on one. I ran into a little trouble while laying out each piece due to the amount I had. During the middle of the second semester, we were allowed to work one a project of our own choice. This included coming up with a proposal board to lay out our ideas.

I had an overarching theme I was planning on fleshing out during the project. However due some time misconceptions and a busy life, it wasn’t able to be brought to life just yet. Internet personas and how they affect people is an interesting topic to look into. Each singular drawing in a project can be a stand alone piece, although they do work better in a collection. The stories each book tells is more focused on how a character acts rather than having an overarching plot. My “Left Brain, Right Heart” zine follows no particular story but has fun with the two characters interacting with each other. My accordion book story follows two lovers in a brief moment of their lives. These smaller parts of life or personality have always been a main focus in my work and something I wish to expand upon in the future. 

My favorite projects to work on were the “Left Brain, Right Heart” zine and my third portfolio project (currently untitled). My zine was quite fun to work on as I was able to create two characters and expand on their personalities.  As the title suggests, there is some imagery of human organs incorporated. This was also the first project where I used collage elements to make multiple large pieces. There is no underlying message behind this work, or even any message for that matter. Sometimes having fun and working with something new can produce interesting results. For the third portfolio project, I created an interesting scenario where someone gets sucked into their internet persona and suffers from identity issues. While the three pieces aren’t enough to tell the full story, this is a project I am continuing to expand on in my spare time. It’s a very real struggle not many people are discussing and is very connected to online culture, something I’m very passionate about. 

The process for all of my projects are relatively similar in terms of where I do the drawing. All pieces are done on Procreate with some being edited in Photoshop for enhanced effect. The actual drawing process does change slightly depending on the feeling I’m going for. With rougher pieces I use my sketch layer as the line art using a pencil brush. For more detailed pieces, it can take upwards of 3 rough sketches to make sure everything looks in place. I experimented with a number of different brushes throughout the year, some more painterly and others very solid. This also affects the creation process as I tend to use textured brushes for larger pieces. When I’m able to experiment with different tools, it’s always interesting to see what new breakthroughs I’m able to discover. My favorite part about making art is the colors, especially using an analogous palette.
