The first of which is based around colour. RISO printing only involves two colours meaning your design has to have a certain simplicity to it in terms of its palette. Also there are only certain inks available at Ravensbourne meaning you need to pick which two you want to use before you make a design. Helpfully, there is a colour book showing all the colours available at Ravensbourne. From the examples we were shown contrasting bold colours like pink and yellow really worked for a RISO print. Another important aspect of the design is that you use only red and black. This is because the design is used only so the printer knows where to place the two coloured ink and how you make sure your print is the right colours is through how you load the ink into the printer but I'll explain that further later.

There is an A2 or A3 machine so you can only print on those 2 sizes. But more importantly you have to use gloss free paper as on glossy paper the ink wont ever set. Within the printer there is a space for the ink which will correspond to the red of your design and a space that will correspond with the black of your design. Founder Noboru Hayama believed that "people should not lose their ideals because there would be no future for japan as a nation. Thus, we must always pursue our ideals to ensure the future."
