The second event I attended was a tutorial on RISO printing. I decide to do this event because I felt it was important to also do something more practical and do something I had never done before. I went into the tutorial with next to no knowledge on RISO printing but learnt a lot about the process and its benefits.

The Design

The first step of RISO printing is producing a design to print. But before you start to make anything you have to make some considerations. The first of which is based around colour. RISO printing only involves two colours meaning your design has to have a certain simplicity to it in terms of its palette. Also there are only certain inks available at Ravensbourne meaning you need to pick which two you want to use before you make a design. Helpfully, there is a colour book showing all the colours available at Ravensbourne. From the examples we were shown contrasting bold colours like pink and yellow really worked for a RISO print. Another important aspect of the design is that you use only red and black. This is because the design is used only so the printer knows where to place the two coloured ink and how you make sure your print is the right colours is through how you load the ink into the printer but I'll explain that further later.

To get your design onto the computer attached to the printer you have to email because the computer can wipe the hard drive your using if you plug it in which is important to know. The file used to print must be a PDF and conform to the appropriate colour settings.

What I remember most about preparing the printer is ensuring you used the right type of paper. There is an A2 or A3 machine so you can only print on those 2 sizes. But more importantly you have to use gloss free paper as on glossy paper the ink wont ever set. This was evidenced by a oddly coloured picture of a cat pinned to the wall which had been made months ago on glossy paper and the ink was still wet to touch.

The next step is to ensure the printer contains the right ink drums. Within the printer there is a space for the ink which will correspond to the red of your design and a space that will correspond with the black of your design. It is important that you place the right colour ink into the right space so your design doesn't have the ink in the wrong spot.

After these steps it is time to start printing. By pressing print the printer creates a master print which lies on the ink drums which is essential for creating your print. It often takes a few times of trying for the master print to be covered in enough ink to get the bold effect RISO produces.

Some research I did into RISO printing taught me that RISO began in 1946 at the end of World War 2. Founder Noboru Hayama believed that "people should not lose their ideals because there would be no future for japan as a nation. Thus, we must always pursue our ideals to ensure the future." This sentiment was reflected in his work as the name RISO comes from the word ideal.

From the tutorial I learnt a whole new skill in knowing how to RISO print. Through learning the process I have a greater understanding over how printing works and its advantages and disadvantages. Its nice knowing I have gained a practical skill through research and development week.
