This red dot was found on all of the Japanese planes that attacked pearl harbor. In Japan Hinomaru translates to "rising sun". The dot was a representation of hope and renewal in Japanese culture.

Mountains

While the Japanese were on their way to Pearl Harbor, they flew through the mountains to hide from the U.S.'s radar. Radar was still new to the world so it was not very reliable or strong. If we had had strong reliable radar we may have been able to see them coming and be some what prepared.

USS Arizona

The USS Arizona was the largest ship in the pacific fleet. It was also the last ship to sink at 8:10pm on December 7, 1941. 1,177 crew members died an the USS Arizona.

Aichi D3A (VAL)

The Aichi D3A was one of the models of planes the Japanese used in the attack on Pearl harbor. 51 of the 353 planes used were Aicha D3As. The job of the Aichi D3As was to drop bombs an a specific target, also called a dive bomber.

USS Arizona Memorial

This is the USS Arizona memorial. It was built above the USS Arizona in remembrance of Pearl Harbor. Each day between 4,000 and 8,000 people go and visit the memorial.

Franklin Van Valkenburgh

Franklin Van Valkenburgh was the captain of the USS Arizona. During the very beginning of the attack Valkenburgh was seen directing the ships defense. He was hit by a shrapnel and refused to be carried to safety.

Doris Miller

Doris Miller was a cook on the USS West Virginia. But when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor at 7:55 he guided people to safety and shot down some Japanese planes with an anti-aircraft gun. He was awarded the Navy Cross.

Radar

This is a picture of one of the radar systems at Pearl Harbor. Privates Joseph Lockard and George Elliot were on this radar at the time before the attack. They first detected airplanes at 7:02am, and followed them until 7:40 until the signal was lost. Then at 7:55 the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.

Uncle Sam

USS California

The USS California was a flagship during WW2. A flag ship is a ship that carries a flag officer and leads a fleet. They are usually the biggest and fastest. The USS California was hit by Japanese torpedoes at the attack on Pearl Harbor and sunk at 8:05 on December 7, 1941.

Internment Camps

After the attack on Pearl Harbor the U.S made internment camps to hold Japanese Americans. They did this to stop Japanese spies that may have been in the U.S. The internment camps were harsh and had extreme temperatures in summer and winter.

HA-19

The HA-19 was a mini submarine used by Japan on the attack on Pearl Harbor. These submarines shot two torpedoes at the ships and could only hold two crew members.

Type 99

This bomb is one out of many the Japanese used to attack Pearl Harbor. One type 99 bomb could take out 4,400 square feet. Each one weighed 551 pounds.
