Marji is affected by events in history because she was a young girl in Iran during their cultural revolution, so her education was changed drastically when Khomeini took control, as her French school was shut down due to anti-westernism and she was forced to wear a veil, which she didn't have to do before Khomeini. The fact that the author split the children in the middle shows the segregation and disunification of the people. The author uses graphic weight to give the frame a dark tone, because this is a dark time for Marji, her classmates, and the people of Iran.

The author revealed traits about Marji such as her passion for a new revolution, but also her confusion and immaturity. The choices made to make the authors point clear includes her tears from sadness, her eyes open in restless fear, and the darkness of an unknown future. As well its her bargaining with a God she thinks could actually help her, which of course proved to not be true.

Marji is affected by these events in history as that she is confused at a young age about why her parents were always protesting against the Shah since she believed that the Shah was chosen by God since during this time, there was a accumulation of changing events and the growing resentment and anger. The author uses the choice of vivid descriptions portrays the Royal Iranian army in the left picture as this corrupt, brutal force that crushes any opposition or resistance to the Shah and the Royal family/ Iranian gov't while portrays the Iranian citizenry as this brave, yet powerless and persecuted movement that is trying to change the Shah's clear brutality and corruption and to allow for more democratic reforms within Iran. The fact that these two contrasting pictures complement what life was under during the Shah and Iranian Government shows how brutal, repressive and oppressive the Shah was to since the citizenry wanted more democratic reforms and to limit his absolute powers.
