• Structuralism: (Wilhelm Wundt) The approach to psychology that seeks to understand the structure and operation of consciousness, or the human mind. They used the introspection method to study mental processes and experiences.

• Functionalism: The tendency to think only in terms of their usual functions, impediments to problem-solving. The school of psychology emphasized the adaptive functions of the human mind or consciousness.

• Gestalt Psychology: It focussed on human perception. It primarily focused on perceptual Organization. For example, when we look at a chair. We do not see four wooden legs but we recognize it completely as a table.

• Behaviourism: A school of thought that emphasizes objectivity, observable behavioral responses, learning, and environmental determinants.

• Psychoanalysis: It was proposed by Dr. Sigmund Freud. He focused on the unconscious mind and childhood experiences. The practical implementation helps us to understand and cure psychological disorders.

• Humanistic Perspective: It was a revolt against Psychoanalysis and Behaviourism proposed by Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow. Humans strive to grow and unfold their inner potential. All human beings have an innate tendency to attain a state of self-actualization and the nature of human activities is that they are goal-oriented.

• Cognitive Perspective: It focuses on mental processes. It views human beings as actively constructing their mind through their exploration into the Physical and Social world. They view the human mind as an information processing system just like a computer and mind receives, processes, transforms, stores, and retrieves information.

• Structuralism: proposed by Wilhelm Wundt and he studied the structure of experiences and the structure of mind through introspection method where in the subjects are asked to describe their experiences and thoughts in detail.

• Functionalism: It was proposed by William James and colleagues. Studies how the experiences function and how people manage with the surroundings using introspection.

• Behaviourism. School of behaviourism says that psychology should be focussed on what is observable and noticeable, rejected the ideas of mind and consciousness as subject matters of psychology. Study of behaviour or responses which can be measured and studied objectively. As per this mind is not observable, so it cant be a basis.

• Gestalt Psychology: The school was emerged as a reaction to structuralism It focussed on the sum of human perceptual experiences. According to Gestalt Psychology, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Instead of looking at the individual components of the mind, we look at the world with a holistic perceptual experience. Therefore, Experience is holistic that means it’s a Gestalt.

• Psychoanalysis: It was proposed by Dr Sigmund Freud. He viewed human behaviour as a dynamic manifestation of unconscious desires for gratification of pleasure and conflicts.

• Humanistic Perspective: It was proposed against Psychoanalysis and Behaviourism by Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow. States that human strive to grow and unfold their inner potential. Behaviour is determined by environmental conditions.

• Cognitive Perspective: It focuses on mental processes. It views human beings as actively constructing their mind through their exploration into the Physical and Social world. Cognition is the process of knowing. It involves thinking, understanding, etc.

Ruchi ~12 Science
